Clift, Stanford shine as Lady Eagles complete sweep of Newman

Addy Clift knocks down a 3-pointer against Newman despite the defense played by the Jets' Bria DeGrate. Clift went 8-of-10 from 3-point range.
Box Score OKLAHOMA CITY (Jan. 26, 2017) – Let's call it what it was – one of the greatest shooting displays in OC women's basketball history.

Sophomore Addy Clift scored a career-high 33 points – going an amazing 8-of-10 from 3-point range – and senior McKenzie Stanford added 29 points and 12 rebounds as OC rallied from an eight-point second-half deficit to beat Newman (Kan.) 86-79 on Thursday in the Eagles' Nest.

The win gave OC (10-11, 5-4 Heartland Conference) a regular-season sweep of Newman (13-7, 3-5) and allowed the Lady Eagles to gain ground on fourth-place Arkansas-Fort Smith in the league standings. OC trails the Lions by just a game with seven to play.

"It's always close when we play Newman and you never know what's going to happen," OC coach Stephanie Findley said. "But I'm proud of the girls for hanging in there. We trailed most of the game but had a great fourth quarter. I was happy to see us finally get some chemistry going."

Clift's eight 3-pointers tied her for third place on the Heartland's single-game list in that category. For a time, it seemed she might threaten Ali Griffin's long-standing school record of 12 3-pointers in one game, set on Jan. 25, 2001, against John Brown (Ark.). Clift's 33 points tied for the most this season by a Heartland Conference player.

"She was on fire, and boy, I just hope we can keep her there," Findley said. "It's hard to keep that up consistently, but she did remind me of Ali tonight. I was even wanting her to pull up over half-court and launch one occasionally if she wanted to. … She did a great job tonight of keeping them off balance with her dribble drives, then pulling up and shooting threes."

As good as Clift was, Stanford was just about her equal. The Heartland's leading scorer posted her seventh double-double of the season – and her fourth in five games. She went a solid 15-of-18 from the free-throw line, with her 15 made free throws tying her for fourth on the Heartland's all-time single-game chart.

Stanford also continued her climb up the Heartland's career scoring list, increasing her total to 1,554 points and moving past Natalie Gamez of St. Mary's (Texas) (1,535 from 2005-09) into fifth place.

"She did play second fiddle a little bit, but she had an amazing stat line," Findley said of Stanford. "I feel like she ought to get to the line 18 times every game. I was proud to see that with her tonight. She was able to knock down 15 out of 18. She was in a little bit of a funk earlier in the year with her free throws but she's come out of that strong and is playing like a senior leader should play right now."

The lead swapped hands 11 times and there were seven ties, indicative of a close game. But Newman led for a long stretch, taking a 23-20 lead on Bria Degrate's 3-pointer to start the second quarter and holding the advantage through halftime (up 40-35) and the third quarter (63-57).

OC used a 13-4 run to start the fourth quarter – which included 3-pointers by Clift and Megan Shelton – and went ahead 68-67 on a free throw by Stanford with 8:02 left.

Consecutive baskets by Newman's Hannah Alexander put the Jets back ahead 71-70, but Stanford hit two free throws with 6:06 left to give OC a 72-71 advantage and Hannah Holasek followed with a basket for a three-point lead.

Newman twice pulled within a point after that and was within 80-77 after a basket by Mali Wright with 54 seconds left, but Stanford converted a traditional three-point play with 30.7 seconds left before the DeGrate turned the ball over.

Sarah Parker – who  hit a game-winning 3-pointer in the final seconds to give OC a win at Newman in December – hit a pair of free throws with 17.3 seconds left to give her team an 85-77 bulge and seal the win.

Parker overcame a slow start to finish with 14 points and six rebounds for the Lady Eagles, going 8-of-9 from the line. OC, the Heartland's best free-throw shooting team, finished 31 of 41 (75.6 percent), compared to 18 of 23 for the Jets.

Wright led Newman with 23 points, DeGrate added 19 and Alexander had 13.

OC will host Oklahoma Panhandle State on Saturday at 1 p.m. in another Heartland game.
