Box Score WICHITA, Kan. (Dec. 19, 2016) – Already the site of
Sarah Parker's career-best scoring game, Fugate Gymnasium on Monday became the site of her first collegiate game-winning shot.
The senior from Piedmont buried a 3-pointer with 4.1 seconds left to cap a 24-point, 10-rebound game and lift Oklahoma Christian past Newman (Kan.) 67-66 on Monday afternoon, the Lady Eagles' second win this season over a regionally ranked foe.
OC (7-6, 2-0 Heartland Conference) has won six of its last seven games, including two on the road to start the league season. Newman (10-4, 0-2) entered the game at No. 8 in the South Central Region rankings but lost its second straight game after a 10-game winning streak.
"We'll take that (2-0 league start) any day and any way," OC coach
Stephanie Findley said. "That's why going so cold in the second half doesn't bother you, if you just come out with a win."
The Lady Eagles blew all of what had been a 10-point lead during an 11-minute stretch in the second half in which they did not have a basket. Newman built a 59-52 lead with 4:48 left and was up 65-59 after a basket by Mali Wright with 1:01 left.
Addy Clift's 3-pointer with 49.2 seconds left cut that deficit in half for OC. The teams traded empty possessions before OC's
Kylee Hicks fouled Hannah Alexander, who made the back end of a two-shot free-throw opportunity with 17.5 seconds left. OC called timeout and advanced the ball to midcourt.
Newman's Natalia Hausmann fouled Parker with 14.6 seconds left and Parker made both free throws to pull OC within 66-64. Then Parker quickly fouled Sheanna James, and James missed both free throws with 13.7 seconds left. Parker rebounded, passed to teammate
Shae Scheffler and trailed the play.
Scheffler returned the pass in the frontcourt. Parker nudged her defender just enough to move her out of defensive position, set her feet and then swished the 3-point shot.
"Shae was looking at me and going, 'trail, trail,' so I was expecting it," Parker said. "They switched off on me and coach showed that I did the Michael Jordan push-off. I thought they were going to call the offensive foul, but when they didn't, I just let it go and it went in."
Findley said Parker made numerous big plays in the final minute and credited Scheffler for the final play.
"It was a huge shot, but a lot of those plays down the stretch were huge – grabbing a rebound here and there, fouling the right person," Findley said. "It was Shae's job to get the ball up to find Sarah … and Shae did exactly what I wanted her to do, so it all kind of fell into place."
Newman quickly inbounded, but managed only a 40-foot heave by Bria DeGrate that fell well short. Newman's Hannah Alexander rebounded and also missed a follow shot, although it wasn't clear if it came after the buzzer or not.
Parker – who opened the season with a career-high 29-point outing in a loss to Regis (Colo.) in Wichita – was a one-woman show in the first quarter, scoring 14 of OC's 16 points as the Lady Eagles led 16-15. She sat out most of the last 6:14 of the half due to foul trouble, but even so, OC built a 37-27 lead before settling for a 38-33 halftime lead.
"I came into the game with an upset stomach," Parker said. "I had something before the game and wasn't feeling too well. Maybe my mind was focused on that and I had to make up for not feeling too well, so I played harder and it worked out for me."
Megan Shelton's 3-pointer with 2:05 left in the third quarter gave OC a 51-46 lead, but that was the Lady Eagles' last basket until Clift's 3-pointer in the final minute. OC still led 52-51 entering the fourth quarter, but Alexander had two buckets in an 8-0 Newman run that put the Jets ahead 59-52.
Parker's double-double was her fourth of the season, and
McKenzie Stanford also recorded one with 11 points and 11 rebounds. It was the second time this season the duo each had recorded a double-double in each game. Clift added 12 points for the Lady Eagles, going 4-of-9 from 3-point range.
DeGrate led Newman with 14 points, while Wright had 13 points and nine rebounds and Alexander added 13 points.
OC will be off until Dec. 29, when they will visit cross-Edmond rival Central Oklahoma for the final nonconference game of the season.
