Strong 2nd half gives Lady Eagles win at Northwestern

Addy Clift scored 15 points for OC in the win at Northwestern, hitting the go-ahead shot in the third quarter.
Box Score ALVA, Okla. (Dec. 10, 2016) – For one half, new Northwestern Oklahoma State coach Tasha Diesselhorst figured out a way to outduel her former coach, Oklahoma Christian's Stephanie Findley. But Findley and OC's players returned the favor in the second half.

OC rallied from a six-point halftime deficit to pull away for an 81-59 win over the Rangers at Percefull Fieldhouse on Saturday night, giving Findley and the Lady Eagles their first road win of the still-young basketball season.

It was a special game for Findley as she coached against Diesselhorst, who played at OC from the 2002-03 season through the 2005-06 season. Then known as Tasha Turney, she received third-team NAIA All-America honors in 2005 and was a three-time All-Sooner Athletic Conference pick. She currently stands at No. 9 on OC's career scoring list.

"I was really proud of the way our girls handled some adversity on the road," Findley said. "Tasha was well-prepared, as I knew she would be, and her team's defense stifled us in the first half. But our girls did a good job of bouncing back in the second half. We controlled the boards better, took care of the ball and knocked down shots."

OC (5-6) shot just 32 percent (8 of 25) in the first half against Northwestern's triangle-and-two defense, but the Rangers weren't much better, going just 10-of-30 (33.3 percent) from the field. Northwestern and OC combined for just 13 points in the second quarter, after which the Rangers led 27-21.

Northwestern (3-6) stretched its lead to 34-25 on a layup by Kalea King with 7:07 left in the third quarter, but OC went on a 22-6 run to end the quarter. The Lady Eagles went ahead for good at 41-39 on a 3-pointer by Addy Clift at the 2:57 mark and two free throws by Shae Scheffler gave OC a 47-40 advantage headed into the fourth quarter.

The Lady Eagles salted away the game at the free-throw line, going `17-of-21 over the final 10 minutes while pushing their lead to as many as 23 points. Megan Shelton hit all eight of her free throws for OC en route to a 16-point outing. She was one of four Lady Eagles to score in double figures, along with McKenzie Stanford (17 points, eight rebounds), Clift (15 points, six rebounds) and Sarah Parker (11 points).

"Megan Shelton was huge from the free-throw line down the stretch," Findley said. "Addy and Sarah didn't let a tough first half keep them down either."

Ashley Pride led Northwestern with 19 points, while King had 14.

OC will open Heartland Conference play on the road next Saturday at Oklahoma Panhandle State.
