Rough day for Lady Eagles with losses to Arkansas Tech, Tarleton State

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 DURANT, Okla. (Feb. 3, 2018) – Saturday was one of those days on the softball fields the Oklahoma Christian Lady Eagles probably would like to forget.

OC opened the second day of action in the Southeastern Regional Invitational with a 7-1 loss to Great American Conference power Arkansas Tech, and things got worse in the second game as Lone Star Conference foe Tarleton State (Texas) beat the Lady Eagles 9-0 in five innings at the Durant Multi-Sports Complex.

It's not the start for OC (1-3) that coach Tom Heath wanted, but he remained pragmatic after the two lopsided losses.

"It's no excuse by any means, but the three games that we've lost here have been to three of the best teams in the tournament," he said. "Tarleton will probably be ranked very high nationally. They have got a lot of very talented, very strong kids. We're going to have to just hang in there. We tell them not to get down.

"What we're looking for is getting better for conference (play). We want to be playing very good ball come conference time. But right now, we haven't put a total game together yet. We've got to get better on some fundamentals, and it will come. Our kids are good and energetic and they're still supporting each other. It's going to happen. It's just going to take some time."

Led by Paty Loredo's three doubles, Arkansas Tech (3-1) jumped on OC starter Madison Hagood (0-1) for six runs in 3 1/3 innings. Freshman Hannah Andrews provided one bright spot for the Lady Eagles, making her first collegiate pitching appearance when she relieved Hagood in the fourth inning and allowing the Golden Suns just one run over 3 1/3 innings.

OC's only run of the day came in the sixth inning, when Hunter Strickland singled with two outs and scored on a double to left-center field by Bridget White. Kristen Dempsey (2-0) pitched five innings for Arkansas Tech to pick up the win.

The score against Tarleton State (4-0) looked overwhelming, but it was close early and the Lady Eagles missed a golden opportunity to make a game of it.

The TexAnns scored all five of their second-inning runs with two outs. The first two came home on a flared single down the right-field line by No. 9 hitter Morgan Ling, and two batters later, Meghann Wrinkle hit a wind-aided three-run homer to left-center field off OC starter Madison Nordyke (0-2).

OC loaded the bases in the third with one out with its No. 3 and No. 4 hitters coming to the plate, but White hit into a fielder's choice and Bailey Strecker grounded out to third base, ending what proved to be the Lady Eagles' only threat.

Ling delivered another two-run single in the third and Karli Herron ended the game in the bottom of the fifth inning with a two-run homer over the left-field wall. Haley Freyman (2-0) went the distance and allowed only three hits for Tarleton State to earn the pitching win.

OC will play Missouri Southern and Central Missouri on the final day of the Southeastern event on Sunday.
