Box Score OKLAHOMA CITY (Dec. 5, 2015) – For 3½ quarters on Saturday afternoon, Oklahoma Christian hung right with No. 4-ranked West Texas A&M, going toe-to-toe with one of the best women's basketball teams in NCAA Division II.
Then Sasha Watson took over for West Texas A&M. The junior guard scored 12 of her 18 points in the final 6:16 and keyed a decisive 10-0 fourth-quarter run that lifted the Lady Buffs past OC 76-70 in the Eagles' Nest.
OC (2-7) used its high-pressure, scrambling defense to force WTAMU (7-0) into 27 turnovers, with the Lady Eagles managing 21 more shot attempts than their opponent as a result. In a game with 15 lead changes and nine ties, OC led for nearly 19 minutes and was up 58-54 after a 3-pointer by
Sarah Parker with 6:26 left.
Watson answered with a three-point play for the Lady Buffs, hit 1-of-2 free throws to tie the game and gave them the lead for good on a basket with 5:12 left.
WTAMU led 70-63 with 1:44 left, but OC made one more push.
Addy Clift scored consecutive buckets for the Lady Eagles, the last with 46 seconds left to pull OC within 70-67. But OC's
Sydney Hill was called for a foul on the ensuing inbounds play and Watson – who went 12-of-15 from the line – hit two free throws.
Alie Decker – a transfer from Wichita State and the daughter of two former OC players – hit two free throws for the Lady Buffs with 20.7 seconds left and Watson sealed the win with two more free throws with 10.8 seconds left. Clift swished a 3-pointer at the buzzer for OC.
McKenzie Stanford led the Lady Eagles with 19 points and seven rebounds, while Clift added 14 points, five rebounds and four steals. Hill scored 10 points for OC, hitting 3-of-5 3-point attempts. OC outrebounded the taller Lady Buffs 41-36, but the Lady Eagles' downfall proved to be their 24 turnovers.
OC led 14-12 after the first quarter and took its biggest lead at 19-12 after a 3-pointer by Stanford about a minute into the second quarter. WTAMU rallied, though, and trailed only 26-25 at halftime.
The Lady Buffs led 36-31 in the third quarter before
Daisha Gonzaque,
Hannah Holasek and
Emma Gade each hit a pair of free throws to put OC back ahead. WTAMU led 51-46 entering the fourth quarter, but a 9-0 spurt by OC, capped by a 3-pointer from Hill, gave the Lady Eagles a 55-51 advantage.
Michaela Neuhaus also scored 18 points for WTAMU.
OC will return to action on Tuesday with a game at longtime archrival Southern Nazarene.
