Box Score 2 OKLAHOMA CITY (March 11, 2014) – For the first time in a long time, Oklahoma Christian is starting to string some wins together, which figures to bode well as the softball season progresses.
OC swept a doubleheader from Northwestern Oklahoma State on a windy Tuesday night at Tom Heath Field, winning 9-1 and 6-0 while extending its winning streak to four games, the Lady Eagles' longest since opening last season with four wins.
The stars were plenty for OC (13-8). Martha Thomas went 5-for-6 with five RBIs in the doubleheader, Danielle Collins smashed a pinch-hit grand slam and Shea Coats and Taylor Mosher each turned in a complete-game performance in the pitching circle.
"These nonconference games really help us to get ready for conference play," OC coach Tom Heath said. "Having a win streak is what we needed (before) going down to play Lubbock (Christian)."
Northwestern (13-5) entered the doubleheader with an impressive record, but managed only six hits and one run in 12 innings against OC pitching.
"They both threw just outstanding," Heath said of Coats and Mosher. "Shea had a great outing in the first game, which only went five innings, which we were happy with. Taylor came back and threw just an outstanding ball game. She had her pitches working. I'm very proud of both of them."
Coats (7-2) threw a five-hitter and didn't allow an earned run in the first game. After the Rangers scored in the top of the second to go up 1-0, only one other Northwestern baserunner reached third base.
OC answered in the bottom of the second with four hits off Northwestern starter Kellie Mason (5-3), with Abby Taliaferro's RBI single up the middle putting the Lady Eagles up 2-1. Courtney Starr added a run-scoring single in the third.
The Lady Eagles busted it open with a six-run fifth inning that included a triple by Thomas and was capped by Collins' opposite-field grand slam that put OC up 9-1 and ended the game via the run rule.
"Danielle is capable of hitting the long ball," Heath said. "She's capable of getting extra-base hits to score some runs. She got all of that one. It was a rocket to right field."
In the second game, Mosher (4-4) was masterful, allowing only a second-inning single to Shyanne Nichols. She walked four and struck out six batters.
Kala Ratliff hit a one-out triple in the third inning, and after Kendra Pierce was hit by a pitch, Thomas smashed a two-run double to center field. Northwestern starter Shelby Anderson (8-3) hit Ratliff with a pitch with the bases loaded in the fourth, scoring Monique Elliott to make it 3-0.
Thomas keyed a three-run sixth with a two-run single and Mosher set the Rangers down in order in the seventh to finish her fourth complete game of the season.
"Moose has been hitting the ball well here lately," Heath said of Thomas. "She's been seeing the ball well. They had first base open and I don't know why they didn't put her on base the way she's been hitting the ball, but I'm glad they didn't. … We needed the RBIs really bad in that second game."
