Box Score 2 ABILENE, Texas (Feb. 15, 2014) – Niki Davidson had a memorable ending to the first weekend of her college softball career.
The Oklahoma Christian freshman hit a grand slam in the third inning of the decisive game of the Lady Eagles' series at Abilene Christian, lifting OC to a 5-1 win on Saturday afternoon at Poly Wells Field.
ACU (2-3) won the first game on Saturday 8-0 in five innings. Still, OC (3-2) took two of three against a foe that's in the first season of transition into NCAA Division I, after the Lady Eagles opened the season with a split at Midwestern State (Texas).
OC's home opener at the new Tom Heath Field at Lawson Plaza will be Tuesday against West Texas A&M.
In the second game Saturday, OC loaded the bases with two outs on two walks and a single by Martha Thomas before Davidson tagged ACU starter Peyton Mosley, sending the pitch over the left-field wall, just inside the foul pole.
That made it 4-0 and the Lady Eagles added another run in the fourth when Kendra Pierce singled home Sarah Endres, who had walked. Mosley (0-1) walked six during her 3 1/3 innings in the circle.
OC starter Taylor Mosher (1-1) cruised until the seventh, when she gave up ACU's only run. Mosher allowed five hits in 6 1/3 innings before giving way to Shea Coats, who retired the Wildcats' final two batters to record her first career save.
In the opener, ACU starter Hannah Null (1-1) allowed three hits and struck out four. Lyndi Smith and Ashley Nolan each hit a two-run homer during a five-run second inning that put the Wildcats ahead 6-0, and they added a pair of runs off OC pitcher Haley Squier (0-1) in the fifth to complete the run-rule win.
