OKLAHOMA CITY (Sept. 24, 2020) – Former Oklahoma Christian basketball star
Addy Clift is a step closer to realizing her professional hoops dream.
The Oklahoma Ravens of the Women's Universal Basketball Association chose Clift with their first-round pick (21st overall) in the WUBA draft held Saturday. According to its website, the WUBA is a league that provides "benefits, programs and services which promote members' professional growth and quality of basketball" and attempts to "give each player the opportunity to play on the next level through pro cups, tours and international events."
The league, which began in 2010, says it has sent more than 250 players to play overseas for professional teams. Clift, a 5-foot-7 guard from Kiowa, described it as a semipro league in which the players "have either been pro, are pro or trying to be pro." She falls into the latter category.
"The league helps women stay in shape and work on skills to get them ready to go or go back overseas," Clift said, although due to the COVID-19 pandemic, it's uncertain when or where that opportunity might arise for her.
Her plan now is to play for the Ravens, who will play home games in El Reno and Enid, until December, and then hopefully land on an overseas roster, much as her former teammate,
Carolyne Lawley, did in August, when she signed a pro contract with Esgueira of Portugal's Liga Feminina de Basquetebol 1st Division.
"As of right now I just work at my part-time job, work out, and start playing in October, I believe," Clift said.
Clift, who played for OC from 2015-19, was one of the most prolific players in OC history, earning NCAA Division II All-America honors as both a junior and senior. The latter year, she led Division II in scoring at 26.4 points per game and was named as the Heartland Conference's player of the year.
She holds most of the Heartland's career, season and single-game scoring records as well as numerous OC scoring marks. She ranks fifth in career scoring (tops among guards) in OC history with 2,104 points.
During the 2019-20 academic year, she remained at OC and competed on the Eagles' cross country and indoor track and field teams. She said she's excited to return to basketball.
"I am unsure on where the WUBA league will take me, but I know God is faithful and He will put me in the right place," Clift said. "I am excited to get to play again!"
