No. 5 in 2019 – Clift sets scoring marks, earns All-America honors for 2nd straight year

Addy Clift set numerous school and conference scoring records while earning All-America honors a second straight season.
Editor's note: One of a series of stories looking back at OC athletic highlights in 2019.
OKLAHOMA CITY (Dec. 27, 2019) – There wasn't a better scorer in NCAA Division II women's basketball than Addy Clift during the 2018-19 season and as a result, the honors rolled in for the Oklahoma Christian senior star in March and April.

Clift's rewrite of the Heartland Conference record book and her second straight All-America season ranks as the No. 5 story in OC athletics for 2019.

Clift, a 5-foot-7 guard from Kiowa, ended 2018 with a bang, scoring 44 points in a Dec. 17 win over Eastern New Mexico to set OC and Heartland single-game scoring records that lasted barely a month. On Jan. 19, she poured in 45 points in a rout of a strong St. Mary's (Texas) squad.

Two days earlier, she broke the Heartland's career scoring record as OC beat Texas A&M International, and those two performances earned her recognition as Division II's national player of the week from the U.S. Basketball Writers Association, a first for an OC women's player.

Clift's 2018-19 season was among the most remarkable ever by an OC or Heartland Conference player. She led NCAA Division II in scoring, averaging 26.4 points per game, setting both Heartland and OC single-season records in that category. She scored 30 or more points in a whopping 11 games.

She also shattered the Heartland career, season and single-game scoring records while becoming OC's highest-scoring guard ever, with 2,104 career points, a total that ranks fifth on the overall program scoring list. She obliterated the former Heartland career record by more than 300 points and did the same to the league's former single-season mark of 656 points, pouring in 739 points, the second-highest total in OC history.

Clift also set numerous OC and Heartland career and season records for 3-point shooting and free-throw shooting, ending her career as Division II's active career leader in made 3-pointers with 307, fourth among active career scorers and fifth in free-throw shooting (85.0 percent).

She was named as the Heartland's player of the year and made the Division II Conference Commissioners Association's All-South Central Region first-team list before appearing on all three major All-America lists. The Women's Division II Bulletin placed Clift on its third-team All-America list, while she received honorable mention on the lists produced by the Women's Basketball Coaches Association and D2CCA.

About the only award she didn't receive was recognition on the Heartland's 20-year anniversary list, as she mysteriously didn't make the cut to be considered among the league's 10 best players ever, even though she was one of only four Heartland players ever to make all three All-America lists in one season and one of only six in league history to earn All-America honors in two or more seasons – in addition to all of her league scoring records.

Turns out, Clift's athletic prowess wasn't limited only to basketball, however. OC cross country and track and field coach Wade Miller convinced Clift to compete on the Eagles' squad in those sports in 2019-20. During the cross country season, Clift emerged as OC's No. 3 runner, despite having not competed in running since her high school years, and she's set to compete as a distance runner for the track team in 2020.
