Box Score 2 OKLAHOMA CITY (April 9, 2018) – Oklahoma Christian's pitching was mostly outstanding during a doubleheader Monday afternoon against Eastern New Mexico, as the Lady Eagles allowed ENMU only a combined five hits in the two softball games.
Unfortunately for OC, one of those was a two-run home run, and that proved enough to give the Greyhounds a split at
Tom Heath Field. Eastern New Mexico won the opener 3-2, but
Madison Hagood tossed a three-hit shutout – her third straight three-hitter – to lift OC to a 3-0 win in the Lady Eagles' final nonconference game of the season.
"Going into this doubleheader, it was nonconference, but I told (the players) that these games are important to get us ready for conference," OC coach
Tom Heath said. "We want to build on what we've been doing and play some other kids to get them ready. It was a good opportunity to play a few people, and those people are producing. Everybody produced today in some way.
"I think we made progress. We are playing now at a very high level – pitching and hitting, and our defense is good."
In the opener, OC (25-19) outhit Eastern New Mexico (17-27) of the Lone Star Conference 5-2, but the Greyhounds took advantage of eight walks issued by OC pitchers. Four of those in the first inning led to the Greyhounds' first run.
OC tied the game in the third, when
Kayla Eichler's sacrifice fly scored
Jessica Killer, who drew a leadoff walk, and the Lady Eagles went up 2-1 in the fourth when Killer singled to center field to bring home
Hunter Strickland, who had singled with one out.
But OC starter
Kaylie Upton (11-3) walked Precious Aguirre with one out in the fifth and Erikka Burke followed with her 15th home run of the season to put Eastern New Mexico back ahead 3-2.
That was enough for Eastern New Mexico starter Leslie Reyes (8-11), who retired 11 straight OC batters to end the game after Killer's fourth-inning single.
It didn't take long for OC to break through in the second game, as
Sheridan Fuller started the game with a triple to right-center field off Eastern New Mexico starter Kimberly Herron (2-6) and scored on a groundout by
Madison Nordyke.
Daelyn Denny's two-out single to left field in the second scored
Bailey Strecker – who had drawn a leadoff walk – and put OC up 2-0. Fuller delivered a two-out single to center to score the speedy Killer (pinch-running for
Kirsten Scott) from second base in the fourth.
Hagood (9-9) was masterful in winning her fifth straight decision, allowing only one runner as far as third base. The junior left-hander from Comanche, Texas, had six strikeouts, three of those to end an Eastern New Mexico at-bat, and allowed only two balls to be hit out of the infield.
"Madison is throwing really well," Heath said. "She is back to where she was last season."
OC's final nine regular-season games will be against Heartland Conference foes, starting with a three-game series at Lubbock Christian (Texas) that will begin with a doubleheader on Friday. OC is 14-7 in league play and in second place, one game ahead of third-place Lubbock Christian.
