Box Score 2 DURANT, Okla. (Feb. 4, 2018) – Oklahoma Christian's offense finally kicked into gear in the late innings of its games Sunday in the Southeastern Regional Invitational, but not quite enough for the Lady Eagles to win.
OC finished the three-day softball event at the Durant Multi-Sports Complex with a 1-5 mark after falling 8-5 to Missouri Southern and 5-4 to Central Missouri, losing the latter game on a walk-off single in the bottom of the seventh after tying the game in the top of the inning.
In a game that started in the morning fog, Missouri Southern (3-2) scored five runs in the fourth and two more in the top of the fifth to go ahead 7-1, but the Lady Eagles answered with four runs in the bottom of the fifth on four singles and two errors, with
Hunter Strickland,
Kayla Eichler and
Caitlin Young recording RBIs
The Lions picked up a sixth-inning insurance run, though, and reliever Taurean Guzman shut down OC the rest of way to pick up her second save. Missouri Southern starter Abby Atkin (1-1) picked up the pitching win, while OC starter
Kaylie Upton (1-1) took the loss.
The game against Central Missouri was played in decidedly different conditions – 55 degrees, but with sunny skies and an 18 mph north wind blowing out to center field. OC's
Bridget White took immediate advantage, following
Madison Nordyke's one-out single by clobbering a no-doubt two-run home run in the top of the first inning. It was the junior's second homer of the weekend.
Central Missouri (3-3) answered with two runs in the bottom of the first, on a single by Courtni Smith. The Jennies took advantage of a throwing error to take a 3-2 lead in the third inning and went up 4-2 in the fifth when Payton Summers' sacrifice fly scored Alexis Koop, who had led off with an infield single.
But with one out in the top of the seventh, freshman
Hannah Andrews' pinch-hit single – in her first collegiate at-bat – kick-started the Lady Eagles.
Sheridan Fuller followed with a single and Nordyke walked to load the bases before White delivered a two-run single to tie the game.
Central Missouri reliever Jordan Johnson (2-0) came in and retired two straight OC batters, keeping the Lady Eagles from taking the lead.
The Jennies had a final turn at bat and took advantage. Koop hit a one-out double to center field off Nordyke (0-3) and with two outs, Taylor Dames singled to left field, allowing Koop to race home with the winning run.
OC will co-host the Edmond Regional Festival next weekend with Central Oklahoma. Nine games will be played over Friday, Saturday and Sunday at
Tom Heath Field, including five involving the Lady Eagles. OC will open the event Friday, hosting Southeastern Oklahoma State and Washburn (Kan.).
