Box Score SAN ANGELO, Texas (Nov. 25, 2017) – A lot of good things happened for Oklahoma Christian on Saturday at Angelo State (Texas) –
Addy Clift poured in 31 points and the Lady Eagles committed only 13 turnovers.
But against a regional power like Angelo State, that wasn't quite enough, as the Rams seized the lead late in the first quarter and never let go en route to an 85-70 win over OC on Saturday afternoon in the Angelo State Thanksgiving Classic at Stephens Arena.
Clift, a junior guard who was a preseason All-Heartland Conference selection, showed why against Angelo State (2-1), going 11 of 25 from the field and missing her career scoring high by only two points. But the only other player for OC (1-5) to score in double figures was sophomore guard
Megan Shelton, who had 11 points. The Lady Eagles shot just 32.9 percent from the field and were outrebounded 60-38.
Angelo State had two big scoring options – Keanna Kelly scored 25 points (going 5 of 10 from 3-point range) and Marquita Daniels added 22. De'Anira Moore had 10 points to go with her 18 rebounds and three blocked shots and Dezirae Hampton nearly also had a double-double, finishing with 12 points and nine rebounds.
Angelo State made the round of 16 in last year's NCAA Division II women's basketball tournament and was No. 8 in the most recent South Central Region rankings. Still – in the first meeting between the programs – OC hung with the Rams for time and led twice, the latter time at 15-14 after a jumper by Clift at the 3:06 mark of the first quarter.
But by quarter's end, the Rams were up 25-18 and they led 48-36 at halftime. By that point, Clift had scored 20 points for OC.
A 7-0 run by OC, capped by a jumper by
Audrey Hayes, pulled the Lady Eagles within 61-51 with 20 seconds left in the third quarter, but they came no closer. OC did close the game on a 7-0 run as well, with Shelton canning two 3-pointers during that stretch.
OC will face another national power on Wednesday, when the Lady Eagles head north on Interstate 35 to play at Emporia State (Kan.). Emporia State also reached the round of 16 in last season's Division II tournament. OC alumna Allison Garrett is Emporia State's president.
