Box Score OKLAHOMA CITY (Feb. 4, 2016) – The game at Oklahoma Christian figured to be the last true road test for Lubbock Christian (Texas), the No. 1-ranked women's basketball team in NCAA Division II. And for awhile on Thursday, the Lady Eagles hung with LCU.
But before long, the Chaparrals began to pull away and OC couldn't keep up. Lubbock Christian eventually won 87-59 at the Eagles' Nest to remain unbeaten at 19-0 overall and 11-0 in the Heartland Conference, good for a 3½-game lead in the conference standings with seven games left.
McKenzie Stanford, the winner of the Heartland player-of-the-week award the past two weeks, scored a game-high 22 points for OC (10-12, 7-5 Heartland), which dropped to fifth place in the league standings, one game back of three teams tied for second – St. Mary's (Texas), Texas A&M International and Arkansas-Fort Smith, all three of which must travel to Lubbock later in the season.
"They're a really good team," OC coach
Stephanie Findley said of the Chaparrals. "You've got to shoot well against them in order to have a chance, and we didn't shoot well. Then after halftime, our defense let us down, too.
"We weren't ready, and that's my fault. We weren't prepared. We could have been better prepared and I didn't do what I should have done."
OC never led, but the Lady Eagles did pull even with Lubbock Christian at 21-21 on a short turnaround jumper by Stanford in the first minute of the second quarter. Blair Taylor answered quickly for Lubbock Christian with a 3-pointer, starting a 16-2 run that gave the Chaparrals space on the scoreboard.
By halftime, Lubbock Christian led 46-30 and the Chaparrals opened the second half with a 10-2 run. Their lead eventually peaked at 30 points.
Point guard Nicole Hampton was the Chaparrals' catalyst, finish with 19 points, 11 rebounds and six assists. Her rebounding prowess helped a tall Lubbock Christian team post a 45-28 edge on the boards.
Kelsey Hoppel added 14 points while Tess Bruffey had 13 points, six rebounds, five assists and three blocked shots for Lubbock Christian, which shot 55.7 percent (34 of 61) from the field.
Conversely, OC shot 32.8 percent (22 of 67). Outside of Stanford, only one other player reached double figures –
Sarah Parker, who went 8-of-8 from the free-throw line and finished with 18 points.
OC will return to action on Saturday, hosting Oklahoma Panhandle State at 1 p.m.
