Box Score 2 AUSTIN, Texas (March 8, 2015) – Saturday was about as frustrating a day for Oklahoma Christian baseball as it gets.
Twice, the Eagles had No. 18 St. Edward's (Texas) within their sights and twice, the Hilltoppers – longtime powers in NCAA Division II and the Heartland Conference – escaped with one-run wins over OC, by counts of 5-4 and 4-3 at Lucian-Hamilton Field.
In the opener, OC (8-7, 0-2 Heartland) seemed in control over St. Edward's (13-6, 2-0) most of the way.
Kyle Lacy had three hits, including a solo home run in the third inning, and RBI singles by
Zac Cobble and
Ben McKenzie during a two-run seventh inning gave the Eagles a 4-0 lead.
The Hilltoppers had managed only three hits in six innings against OC pitchers
Dillon Endecott and
Eddie Broll. But St. Edward's came alive offensively in their final scheduled at-bat in the seven-inning game, using three hits, three walks and a hit batsman to tie the game at 4-4.
In the eighth, the Hilltoppers' Nick Lerick singled and eventually scored the winning run on a single by A.J. Hermanson, who had three RBIs.
Reliever
Garett Hill (1-1) took the loss for OC while Cam Hatch (3-2) picked up the win for St. Edward's.
Kelby Reneau (2-2) and
Luke Sandoval combined on a solid pitching performance for OC in the second game, but the Hilltoppers were able to scratch out leads of 2-1, then 3-2, then 4-2 in the fifth inning.
The Eagles pulled within 4-3 in the sixth, when
Brady Baugh singled and scored, but St. Edward's reliever Vinny Whitenight shut out the Eagles in the seventh to record his first save of the season. Another reliever, Bryce Davis (3-1) picked up the win for the Hilltoppers.
The teams will finish their series at 1 p.m. on Sunday.
