Lady Eagles fade late, fall at league-leading Lubbock Christian

Box Score LUBBOCK, Texas (Feb. 5, 2015) – For a long time on Thursday night, Oklahoma Christian had a decent chance to do at the Rip Griffin Center what no visiting team has done in more than two years – come away with a win over Lubbock Christian (Texas).

But OC went ice-cold during the final 10 minutes and league-leading Lubbock Christian pulled away for a 69-50 win over the Lady Eagles, LCU's 22nd straight home conference victory.

OC (8-12, 5-8 Heartland Conference) had won four of its last five games. OC led by as many as five points in the first half and was within six of Lubbock Christian (16-5, 10-1) with 9:55 left, but the Lady Eagles managed only two points the rest of the way against a team ranked fourth in the NCAA Division II South Central Region.

The Lady Eagles shot 27.3 percent from the field (18 of 66) and had only two players reach double figures in scoring – Sydney Hill and Jasmine Hinton, who scored 10 points each. OC outrebounded a much taller Lubbock Christian squad 44-43 and harassed the Lady Chaparrals into 20 turnovers, but managed only five points off turnovers and 12 second-chance points.

"Same song, second verse – our offense needs work," OC coach Stephanie Findley said. "I think their shot blocking ability got to us and we quit attacking. We quit being aggressive whether it was taking the open three or penetrating gaps. It's hard to get inside when they have two of their big girls out there at the same time."

Indeed, Lubbock Christian – one of the nation's best shot-blocking teams – had 11 blocks against the Lady Eagles, including five by Allison Szabo and four by Kellyn Schneider, making it difficult for OC to establish any sort of inside presence.  Despite all of their missed shots, though, the Lady Eagles used a solid defensive effort to stay in the game until the final minutes.

"I thought we did a really good job on defense for most of the night and it's a major feat to have outrebounded them," Findley said.

The lead swapped hands seven times in the first half. OC led 24-19 after two free throws by McKenzie Stanford with 8:50 left, but the Lady Chaps scored the next nine points and led 28-24 after a three-point play by Szabo, who had 13 points. Lubbock Christian led 35-29 at halftime.

The Lady Chaps pushed their lead to 51-38 after a layup with 13:32 left by Schneider, who had 11 points and 12 rebounds. OC responded with an 8-1 run and when Hinton made two free throws with 9:55 left, the Lady Eagles trailed only 54-48.

But OC's only points after that came on a basket by Hinton with 5:46 left as Lubbock Christian closed the game on a 15-2 run.

Haley Fowler led Lubbock Christian with 16 points while Haley Burton had 13 to go with six assists. Skyler Newberry added eight points and eight rebounds for OC, while Kylee Hicks grabbed a career-high nine rebounds.

OC will continue its road trip on Saturday with a visit to Oklahoma Panhandle State.
