Cold-shooting Lady Eagles lose at Southwestern Oklahoma State

OC guard Sydney Hill looks for an opening during Tuesday's loss at Southwestern Oklahoma State.
Box Score WEATHERFORD, Okla. (Nov. 24, 2015) – Another rough shooting outing led to another defeat for Oklahoma Christian on Tuesday.

The Lady Eagles shot 28.9 percent from the field (24 of 83) en route to a 92-69 loss to Southwestern Oklahoma State at the Pioneer Cellular Events Center.

In the first meeting between the in-state rivals since November 2004, OC (1-5) had a few bright spots – Sarah Parker scored a career-high 29 points to go with eight rebounds, McKenzie Stanford had a double-double with 11 points and a career-high 12 rebounds and the Lady Eagles outrebounded Southwestern 49-48, grabbing 25 offensive rebounds along the way.

But the Lady Eagles didn't knock down shots, or get out to guard 3-point shooters, when they needed to against Southwestern (1-4). The Bulldogs went 12-of-23 from 3-point range, including a sizzling 8-of-15 (53.3 percent) in the second half.

"If we're not going to shoot any better, then we've got to play better defense," OC women's basketball coach Stephanie Findley said. "We're just in a funk right now and we need to get out of it."

Things began swimmingly for OC, as 3-pointers by Parker, Sydney Hill (15 points) and Stanford staked the Lady Eagles to a 13-3 lead less than 3½ minutes into the game.

OC remained ahead until early in the second quarter, then the Bulldogs used a 9-0 run to take a 29-22 lead. The Lady Eagles kept it close, coming within 34-32 after a 3-pointer by Parker at the 5:25 mark of the quarter, but Jennifer Williams scored seven points in a 12-2 Southwestern run and the Bulldogs led 47-36 at halftime.

OC pulled within 49-43 on consecutive baskets by Parker early in the second half, but the Bulldogs answered with 3-pointers on four consecutive possessions, including three straight by sophomore Morgan Vogt. Kylie Franz's 3-pointer at the 4:38 mark make it 61-48 and OC came no closer than 12 points the rest of the way.

Daisha Gonzaque added 11 points for the Lady Eagles, who shot 35.1 percent from 3-point range (13 of 37). Jade Jones led Southwestern with 16 points, while Vogt and Williams had 15 each and Hailey Tucker scored 11. Korina Chapman grabbed 14 rebounds for the Bulldogs.

The Lady Eagles will be off until Monday, when they will host NAIA foe St. Gregory's.
