ODESSA, Texas (Feb. 6, 2014) – Oklahoma Christian shot a season-low 25 percent from the field and dropped its second straight game, losing 64-49 to Texas-Permian Basin at the Falcon Dome on Thursday night.
OC (11-9, 7-6 Heartland Conference) beat UTPB (6-14, 5-10) by 27 points in mid-December, but the Lady Eagles' inability to hit shots made it easy for the Falcons in the rematch. OC never led during the game's final 34½ minutes as only one player – McKenzie Stanford, with 15 points – reached double digits in scoring.
"I am speechless," OC coach Stephanie Findley said.
The Lady Eagles made just 16 of 64 shots, including a 3-of-16 effort from 3-point range, and shot 66.7 percent (14-of-21) from the free-throw line. Every time it looked like OC might come back, missed shots or turnovers (the Lady Eagles had 17) short-circuited the rally.
The shooting woes overshadowed a tremendous effort by senior forward Roz Hamilton, who grabbed a season-high 16 rebounds, just two off her career high. It was her fourth straight double-digit rebounding game.
OC's last lead came at 10-9 after a 3-pointer by Krista Stevens with 15:04 left in the first half. UTPB went on a 14-4 run after that and never trailed again.
UTPB led 34-29 at halftime. OC pulled within 36-32 but the Falcons scored 12 of the next 16 points and led 48-36 after Brianna Jones' layup with 12:41 left.
OC closed the gap to 50-46 on a layup by Stanford with 5:22 left, but the Falcons scored the next seven points to seal the win. OC's only points after that basket came on a three-point play by Stanford with 1:43 left.
Valerie Barriga led the Falcons with 17 points and seven rebounds, while Danielle Wilson had 12 points and seven rebounds. OC's second-leading scorer was Logan McKee with seven points.
The Lady Eagles will visit league-leading Lubbock Christian (Texas) on Saturday afternoon.
