Free-throw shooting struggles burn Lady Eagles as they fall to Arkansas Tech

Jasmine Hinton matched her career high with 10 points in OC's loss to Arkansas Tech.
Box Score OKLAHOMA CIT Y (Nov. 29, 2014) – Time and again on Saturday afternoon, Arkansas Tech gave Oklahoma Christian an opening, sending the Lady Eagles to the free-throw line. But OC wasn't able to take advantage.

The Lady Eagles shot 45 free throws but made only 25 of them – a 55.6 percent clip – allowing perennial NCAA Division II power Arkansas Tech to lead almost all the way while posting an 81-67 win over OC at the Eagles' Nest.

Arkansas Tech (5-0) outrebounded OC 23-13 in the second half and 40-33 for the game, helping the Golden Suns maintain a double-digit lead for the final 14:52 and giving their coach, Dave Wilbers – a former OC baseball player – a pleasant homecoming. Fatima Adams played outstanding for Arkansas Tech, finishing with 22 points, 11 rebounds and four steals.

Meanwhile, OC (2-4) shot 39.6 percent from the field (19 of 48) and has lost three of its last four home games after winning 18 of its previous 19. Coach Stephanie Findley was succinct in her assessment of the game.

"Our shooting woes continue and we once again got badly beaten on the boards in the second half," Findley said. "We need to clean up those areas and turn things around."

OC fell into a quick 10-3 hole, but rallied to tie the game at 14-14 on a basket by McKenzie Stanford at the 11:52 mark of the first half. A 3-pointer by Katrina Hayden put the Golden Suns up 25-19, but OC again tied it up, with Stanford's steal and layup making it 25-25 at the 6:36 mark.

Arkansas Tech scored the next 10 points, though, and never trailed again. OC closed the half on an 8-2 spurt to pull within 37-33 by halftime, but the Golden Suns scored six points in the first two minutes after halftime to re-extend their lead to 10.

Another 3-pointer by Hayden (who went 4-of-5 from behind the arc and scored 23 points) made it 51-39 with 14:52 left and OC came no closer than 11 points the rest of the way.

Stanford led OC with 15 points, while Sydney Hill added 12 and Jasmine Hinton scored 10 (on 4-of-6 shooting) to match her career high. Hinton, a junior guard from Edmond, also scored 10 points as a freshman in a win over Southern Nazarene in the National Christian College Athletic Association Central Region championship game.

Mary Crow added 10 points, eight rebounds and five assists for Arkansas Tech.

The Lady Eagles will be off until next Saturday, when they will visit West Texas A&M, last season's Division II runner-up.
