Despite Stanford’s career high, hot-shooting No. 18 Washburn holds off OC

Box Score OKLAHOMA CITY (Nov. 25, 2014) – Washburn (Kan.) came into the Eagles' Nest on Tuesday with perhaps the best credentials a visitor will have this season – a No. 18 ranking in the USA Today NCAA Division II coaches' poll and fresh off a win over 2014 national quarterfinalist Drury (Mo.).

The Ichabods certainly lived up to their clippings. Washburn shot a sizzling 52.8 percent from the field and dominated the Lady Eagles on the boards en route to an 81-66 win.

Sophomore forward McKenzie Stanford poured in a career-high 25 points for OC (2-3), but the Lady Eagles couldn't overcome a 47-27 rebounding deficit and shot only 34.3 percent from the field (23 of 67).

"We had too many spurts when we weren't scoring and we shot 30-something percent from the field," OC coach Stephanie Findley said. "You're not going to be able to beat good teams like that, much less looking at the rebound stats.

"You play these guys to see who the top teams are and what they look like, so that you can start molding your team into those programs and morphing into those programs. I don't know a lot about NCAA Division II top-10 teams and what they look like, but I bet they're pretty close to a top-10 team."

Washburn (5-0) started quickly, with a basket by burly post player Honor Duvall (12 points) and a 3-pointer by Taylor Ignoto making it 5-0 just 90 seconds into the game and prompting Findley to call a timeout.

The Ichabods hit four of their five 3-pointers during the first 8½ minutes – Ignoto and Jayna Smith had two each during that stretch – and led 32-20 after Duvall hit two free throws with 9:08 left in the first half.

Stanford fueled OC's best run of the game, a 10-4 spurt that came when the Lady Eagles turned to their full-court scramble defense. Stanford had five of those points and Sydney Hill had two steals during that stretch. Hill's layup at the 7:56 mark pulled OC within 32-29.

But that proved to be OC's last basket for almost seven minutes, allowing Washburn to rebuild its lead. The Ichabods led 47-33 at halftime and to that point had outrebounded OC 27-9.

The Lady Eagles never pulled within double digits in the second half, but never let Washburn get too comfortable, either. After coach Ron McHenry pulled most of his starters with 1:55 left and the Ichabods up 18, OC scored nine of the next 11 points and came within 77-66 after a 3-pointer by Logan McKee. After another turnover, McHenry put four starters and one key reserve back into the game to finish.

The Ichabods committed 25 turnovers, and 10 of those were steals by OC.

McKee finished 14 points and four assists while Hill had 11 points, four assists and four steals.

"We're still messing with our lineup a little bit to see who's working best together," Findley said. "I think we saw some good defensive lineups out there tonight, but we just can't seem to get the ball to drop. … We're just not hitting shots right now."

Taylor, who went 3-of-3 from 3-point range, led Washburn with 20 points, while Casyn Buchman had 17 and Duvall had 12. Smith just missed a double-double with nine points and nine rebounds.

OC will host another top-shelf Division II program on Saturday, when traditional power Arkansas Tech will visit for a 1 p.m. game. The Golden Suns are coached by former OC baseball player Dave Wilbers. His wife, Christina (Urton) Wilbers, played for Findley and the Lady Eagles from 1989 to 1994.
