Box Score OKLAHOMA CITY (Nov. 20, 2014) – For so long, Oklahoma Christian had seemed nearly invincible while playing in the Eagles' Nest. Entering Tuesday night's game against Texas Wesleyan, the Lady Eagles had won 18 of their last 19 home contests, a run dating back to the 2012-13 season.
But the home court didn't help the Lady Eagles this time. OC didn't rebound well and had too many defensive lapses, allowing Texas Wesleyan's Stacey Darnley to hit seven 3-pointers and score 25 points to lead the Rams to an 88-75 win.
OC (1-2) had won 11 straight at home since losing to Lubbock Christian (Texas) last Dec. 14, but th Lady Eagles never found a rhythm against Texas Wesleyan (6-2), as they managed to lead only twice in the game, and never by more than three points.
"You hope you're more comfortable in your gym, and we usually are, but tonight they shot like it was their home gym instead of us doing that," OC coach
Stephanie Findley said. "We ran into a buzzsaw as far as what they were shooting from the 3-point line. We didn't adjust quick enough and we obviously need to work on our defense a little bit."
Senior guard
Logan McKee poured in a career-high 22 points, hitting 5-of-9 3-point attempts, while sophomore forward
McKenzie Stanford added 17 points and junior guard
Sydney Hill scored 15. But outside of McKee, the Lady Eagles went 2-of-16 from behind the arc. OC shot 34.9 percent from the field (22 of 63) and missed numerous layups.
The Rams outrebounded OC 46-39, with Katelynn Threats grabbing 15 to go with her 20 points.
"Logan has been ready to play every game," Findley said. "This is her senior season and she's trying to take it out with a bang, but we can't get anybody else on the boat right now. I feel like some of us are hesitating. We're playing a little scared. There are a lot of kids playing who have been role players in that past that need to step up and be the main players now. We're kind of feeling our way through that, seeing who that's going to be."
Stanford capped an 8-0 run by the Lady Eagles with a basket to give them their largest lead of the game at 26-23 with 7:28 left in the first half, but Texas Wesleyan quickly regained the lead with a 7-0 spurt and led 42-38 at halftime.
A 16-foot jumper by
Jasmine Hinton with 13:53 left put OC ahead 52-51 with 13:53 left, but 20 seconds later, Darnley put the Rams back ahead with a basket and they never trailed again. Texas Wesleyan pulled away, leading by as many as 17 points in the final minute.
Darnley entered the game shooting 22.4 percent from 3-point range but finished 7-of-14, pacing the Rams' 11-of-31 effort from behind the arc. Kashyla Fields and Amy Easley each scored 14 points for Texas Wesleyan, one of the programs that joined the NAIA's Sooner Athletic Conference after OC departed that league following the 2011-12 academic year.
OC guard
Kaitlyn Morris made a bit of program history by starting the game. The sixth-year senior, who has endured two season-ending knee injuries, now has started at least one game in five different seasons. She started for the Lady Eagles in the 2010 NAIA tournament before missing all of the 2010-11 season and all but four games of the 2011-12 campaign.
The Lady Eagles will return to action Saturday at 1 p.m., hosting former SAC rival USAO.
