Martin leads OC over UCO

Senior Rachel Martin returned from injury to score a career-high 28 points and lead Oklahoma Christian University to a 78-75 victory over the University of Central Oklahoma here Saturday.

Martin made three free throws in the final seconds to secure a season sweep of the series with the NCAA Division II Bronchos. The 2006 honorable mention All-American sprained her ankle in OC's 64-63 win at UCO last month and had missed the past five games.

Senior guard Mackenzie Walker's layup with 14 seconds left put the Lady Eagles on top 75-73 and Martin's three charity tosses in the final 10 seconds sealed OC's seventh win of the season against two losses.

OC shot a red-hot 61 percent in the first half to forge a 46-36 lead at halftime. Martin led the way with 14 first-half points.

Despite a slow start in the second half, the Lady Eagles maintained control. Freshman Traci Murphree's field goal at 11:40 kept the margin at 10 points, 56-46.

Martin's three-pointer at 9:56 made the score 60-51 and another Martin three-pointer gave the Lady Eagles a 68-61 lead with 5:40 remaining.

The Lady Bronchos, led by Liz Brenner, reeled off a 12-4 run to take a 73-72 lead with 2:08 left. A Martin free throw tied the score at 73-all with at the 1:11 mark.

After trading trips down the floor, the Lady Eagles used a fast break to go up 75-73 when freshman Danielle Cox fed Walker for a layup with 14 seconds left.

Mallory Markus and Cristina Yarbrough hit free throws for UCO, but Martin answered with two free throws with eight seconds remaining another with four seconds left to cement the victory.

OC shot 55 percent for the game with four players in double figures. Besides Martin's 28, Walker had 13 and senior Katie Fariss and sophomore Lindsey Gipson each scored 10 points. Fariss led all players with eight rebounds.
