OKLAHOMA CTIY, Okla. (Jan. 29, 2009) – Behind a smothering defensive effort, the Oklahoma Christian University Lady Eagles defeated St. Gregory's University (Okla.) 62-27 on Thursday night.
The 27 points given up is the fewest by a Lady Eagle team since they routed Hillsdale Baptist (Okla.) 91-21 earlier this season. Tonight's score marks the fourth-lowest point total ever surrendered by a Lady Eagle team, trailing only a 122-19 blowout of Arkansas Baptist in 2004-05, the Hillsdale game, and a 96-23 hammering of Bartlesville Wesleyan (Okla.) in 1982-83.
The Lady Eagles held SGU to just 21-percent shooting from the floor, and seven-percent from three-point range, while forcing 19 turnovers.
Brittney Kennedy got the scoring started for the Lady Eagles as they raced out to a 10-2 lead by the first half's 13-minute mark.
The Lady Eagles then finished the first half on a 19-7 run, fueled by a barrage of three pointers from Haley Myers, Kelsey Kniffen (who hit two), Lisa Chenoweth and Lindsey Gipson. The score at the half was 32-13 in favor of Oklahoma Christian.
It was much of the same in the second half, as the Lady Eagles kept scoring, and kept SGU in check. Oklahoma Christian outscored SGU 30-14 in the final stanza behind nine points from Hillary Duncan.
Duncan led all scorers in the game with 15 points. Kennedy added 10 points of her own and pulled down six rebounds. Gipson posted seven points on the night, Kniffen and Myers both had six and Tarynn Branscum had five.
The Lady Eagles shot 45 percent from the floor, and just under 50 percent from three-point land by netting 9-of-20 attempts. The team also posted 17 assists, led by Kailan DeCamp with four and Charlotte Heron with three.
The victory moves the Lady Eagles to 13-7 on the season and 6-6 in Sooner Athletic Conference play.
The Lady Eagles will be back in action on Saturday when they will travel to Shawnee, Okla., to take on the fifth-ranked Lady Bison of Oklahoma Baptist University. The Lady Eagles defeated OBU by five points (65-60) at home earlier this season.
