OKLAHOMA CITY, Okla. (Feb. 9, 2008) – A 15-0 second-half run propelled the Oklahoma Christian Lady Eagles to a 58-35 win over St. Gregory's Saturday.
SGU's 35 points tied the 10th-lowest total by a Lady Eagle opponent in OC history. It also matched the lowest-ever total by an OC conference opponent. The Lady Eagles beat Bethany Nazarene (now Southern Nazarene) 46-35 during the 1983-84 season.
The Lady Eagles jumped out to a quick 11-2 lead behind a pair of three-pointers by Lindsey Gipson.
Gipson scored four more of her 11 first-half points during a 7-0 run that pushed OC's advantage to 18-5 at the 6:02 mark.
But St. Gregory's rallied back within seven at 19-12 on the second of back-to-back treys by Allison Klick.
The Lady Eagles went on to take a 22-14 lead into halftime. Both teams shot just 19 percent from the field in the first half, but OC's 10-of-14 shooting from the free-throw line gave the Lady Eagles their halftime edge.
Chelsey Wyer and Kailan DeCamp combined to score the first five points of the second half to build OC's lead back to 13 points at 27-14.
But SGU again fought back, closing within 31-27 with 13:18 remaining. That's when the Lady Eagles took full control, scoring 27 of the game's final 35 points to win by a decisive 23-point margin.
The late run was kicked off by a 15-0 spurt that put OC ahead 46-27 with 8:12 left. Charlotte Heron scored the first six points in the run, including a traditional three-point play at the 11:20 mark that put the Lady Eagles up by double digits to stay at 37-27.
Two Hillary Duncan free throws, a Gipson three-point play, a DeCamp basket and a Danielle Cox putback finished off the 15-0 streak as OC improved to 8-8 in the Sooner Athletic Conference and 12-11 overall.
SGU (3-12, 5-17) was led by Klick's 13 points. Sunni Hill chipped in seven points and grabbed a game-high 12 rebounds.
Gipson led the Lady Eagles with 15 points, followed by DeCamp with nine and Heron with eight. Cox and Wyer nabbed 10 and seven rebounds, respectively. Heron added three blocked shots.
OC hosts Wayland Baptist at 6 p.m. Thursday in the middle game of a three-game homestand.
