John Brown upsets Lady Eagles

SILOAM SPRINGS, Ark. (Feb. 21, 2008) – John Brown (Ark.) earned its biggest win of the season with a 63-59 upset of Oklahoma Christian Thursday.

JBU (3-16 in the Sooner Athletic Conference, 8-19 overall) led virtually the entire way to snap a eight-game losing streak. The Lady Eagles (10-9, 14-12) saw a three-game winning streak end as they lost for just the sixth time in 42 meetings with JBU.

The Lady Golden Eagles hit of eight of its first 11 shots and Claire Harrison scored 13 points in the first eight minutes to help John Brown burst out to a 21-8 lead.

With JBU up 25-15, baskets by Charlotte Heron and Hillary Duncan bookended six points by Kailan DeCamp in a 10-1 run that trimmed OC's deficit to one.

Two Emily Ortiz free throws and a basket by Ashley Taylor momentarily held off OC, but Rebecca Roehrkasse's deuce gave the Lady Eagles a 31-30 lead heading into halftime.

But JBU started fast again in the second half, scoring the first eight points on two Ashley Taylor free throws and baskets by Micaela Cully, Harrison and Taylor.

Two Brittany Kennedy buckets and a Devin Sewell score helped OC surge back within 38-37. JBU wouldn't be denied, though, building another double-digit lead at 51-41 when Lenece Glossett hit a three-pointer with 8:44 left.

OC cut the lead to six points on three occasions down the stretch, but could draw no closer until a Kennedy basket made it 61-56 JBU with 14 seconds remaining.

After Cully made a free throw, Haley Myers hit a desperation trey with three seconds left to trim the lead to 62-59. But Casey Shivers clinched the win with a foul shot on the other end.

Foul trouble plagued the Lady Eagles throughout the game. OC's post trio of Heron, Kennedy and Sewell all ended with four fouls while DeCamp fouled out.

OC also struggled to shoot the ball, hitting 39 percent from the field, 29 percent from three-point range and 58 percent from the free-throw line.

Kennedy led the Lady Eagles with 14 points, followed by DeCamp's 12 and Duncan's 10. Heron grabbed 11 rebounds.

Harrison and Cully scored 18 and 13 points, respectively, for JBU while Taylor totaled 12 points and 10 boards.

The Lady Eagles will look to bounce back on Saturday at home against Rogers State (Okla.). The game tips off at 6 p.m.
