OKLAHOMA CITY, Okla. (Jan. 31, 2008) – Oklahoma Christian had No. 7 Oklahoma City on the ropes Thursday night, but the Stars prevailed 57-55 for their fifth-straight win.
OCU's Laura Duncan's three-pointer with four seconds left gave OCU a last-second win in the first 2008 installment of the "Backyard Brawl" Presented by Bank of America and The Oklahoman.
OC led 4-2 early in the game on scores from Charlotte Heron and Devin Sewell.
After exchanging a lead and tie over the next four minutes, Duncan put the Stars up 8-6 on a three-pointer at the 16:06 mark.
The Lady Eagles sliced the deficit to 15-13 on a conventional three-point play from Brittney Kennedy with 10:22 left.
Neither team scored over the next four-plus minutes. Then a quick 4-0 jaunt from OCU lifted the stars to a 19-13 lead with 5:57 left.
The Stars led by as many as seven in the half, but the Lady Eagles went on a 5-2 charge to close the half and pull within 26-23 at intermission.Â
OC shortened the deficit to two twice in the opening minute of the second half. Lindsey Gipson's score with 19:03 on the clock to made it 28-26.
OCU upped their edge to its largest at 41-32 with 14:27 to play, but a furious 15-0 OC run gave the Lady Eagles their first lead since the 16:20 mark of the first half.
DeCamp got it started when she stole a Star pass and took the ball three-quarters court for two at the 12:34 point.
A triple from Haley Myers followed and after a two from Kennedy, two free throws from Chelsey Wyer, a succession of Hillary Duncan penetrating baskets and a Wyer putback, OC led 47-41 with 6:24 to play.
Duncan hit for three and Mikelle Brown scored to draw OCU to within one at 49-48 with 4:37 remaining.
Kennedy dropped home two off the glass 32 seconds later and DeCamp connected on 2-of-2 free throws to again put OC up five at 53-48 with 3:23 left.
Four-straight Brown points followed to again make it a one-point contest with 1:51 left.
Zanita Johnson had a chance to put OCU on top with 53 seconds to play, but missed the front end of a one-and-one. Wyer snagged the rebound and was immediately fouled. But the freshman could not convert at the line.
Viola Beybeyah hit a 15-foot jumper on the other end to give OCU a 54-53 with 30 seconds to play.
DeCamp came right back though and scored off the glass in the lane to again put the Lady Eagles on top with 15 seconds left.
But Duncan's third triple of the night lifted the Stars on top 57-55 with four seconds on the clock.
OC could only manage a half-court desperation heave in the closing seconds.
DeCamp had a game-high 18 points while Kennedy and Gipson scored seven apiece.
Beybeyah led OCU with 12 points, while Duncan finished with 11 points.
The loss was OC's 22nd in its last 24 meetings with OCU. The Lady Eagles and Stars split last year's games with the home team winning both times.
OC's next game comes Saturday night at SAC newcomer Mid-America Christian (Okla.). Both the Eagles (10-0) and Lady Eagles (4-0) have never lost to MACU. Game time is set for 6 p.m. on the women's side and 8 p.m. for the men.
