OKLAHOMA CITY, Okla. (March 1, 2008) – No. 5 Oklahoma City was too much for Oklahoma Christian on Saturday night as the Stars beat the Lady Eagles 68-48 to conclude the 2007-08 regular season.
The game was this year's final installment of the "Backyard Brawl" presented by Bank of America and The Oklahoman. OCU snuck past OC 57-55 on Jan. 31.
OC (16-13, 12-10) now preps for the Sooner Athletic Conference Tournament to be held at the Eagles' Nest on March 5-11. The Lady Eagles will be the No. 5 seed and will face St. Gregory's at 4:30 p.m. Wednesday in their first-round game.
The Lady Eagles took a 10-6 lead on Saturday night when Kailan DeCamp cleaned up her own miss at the 14:51 mark of the first half.
The teams combined for just seven points over a physically-played five-plus-minute span that saw OCU assume a 12-10 by the 10-minute point.
Three free-throw points from DeCamp and Brittney Kennedy were OC's only points until DeCamp scored a conventional three-pointer at 4:20 to narrow the deficit to 21-16.
OC forced a turnover on the defensive end, then cut the lead to 21-18 on a Haley Myers back-cut lay in at the 3:40 point.
But sloppy passing cost the Lady Eagles in the final two minutes as OCU got six easy breakaway points off turnovers to close the half on an 11-2 run.
The Stars led 32-20 at intermission. OCU converted 14 OC first-half turnovers into 14 points.
The Lady Eagles used six points from DeCamp, Myers and Lindsey Gipson from 18:20 to 17:20 to trim a 16-point OCU edge down to 10 points at 36-26.
But OC would come no closer the rest of the way.
Myers sunk a triple from the wing at 12:29 to make it a 42-31 contest. The Stars had an answer though, ripping off a 15-5 run to go up 57-36 by the 5:12 mark.
OCU (25-4, 21-1) led by as many as 22 points en route to its 15th straight victory.
DeCamp led the Lady Eagles with 12 points. Myers and Kennedy each chipped in eight points.
Official game times and pairings for the SAC Tournament will be announced tomorrow.
