Scoring droughts bite OC in loss at MACU

Box score

OKLAHOMA CITY, Okla. (Feb. 26, 2009) – Mid-America Christian (Okla.) defeated Oklahoma Christian 43-38 in Sooner Athletic Conference women's basketball Thursday night.

The Lady Eagles, now 7-1 all-time against MACU, shot just 20 percent from the field in tying a program record for fewest points in a game. OC lost 57-38 at Wayland Baptist (Texas) last month.

OC led 24-23 at halftime and took a 32-26 advantage when Haley Myers nailed a left-wing three-pointer with 10:54 to go.

But the Lady Eagles, who went more than eight minutes without a field goal before Myers' trey, would endure another major drought after Charlotte Heron's putback made it 34-28 with 9:30 left in the game.

With OC going scoreless for the next 7:51, MACU reeled off 11 straight points, eight of them by Danein Wells, to take a 39-34 lead.

Brittney Kennedy converted a three-point play with 1:39 remaining to pull OC within 39-37, but that was as close as the Lady Eagles would get.

Two free throws each from April Hale and Nathalia Aguilar in the closing seconds sealed the home upset for the Lady Evangels (5-16 in the SAC, 12-19 overall).

Both teams made just four field goals in the second half (OC 4 of 30; MACU 4 of 21) in a game marked by shooting struggles.

OC hit 20 percent from the field, 10 percent from three-point range (2 of 20) and 63 percent from the free-throw line (12 of 19). MACU shot 21 percent overall (11 of 53), 15 percent from beyond the arc (2 of 13) and 61 percent from the charity stripe (19 of 31).

The Lady Evangels dominated on the glass, outrebounding OC 53-34 overall and grabbing 11 key offensive rebounds in the second half.

OC got 12 points from Kennedy and 10 from Lindsey Gipson. Heron pulled down 12 rebounds for the Lady Eagles. Karina Trinidade led MACU with 15 points and 15 rebounds while Wells added 13 points.

The Lady Eagles (6-15, 13-16) look to break a nine-game losing streak when they close out the regular season at home Saturday against 15th-ranked Oklahoma City in the "Backyard Brawl." The women's game starts at 6 p.m., followed by the men's game at 8 p.m.
