SHAWNEE, Okla. (Dec. 6, 2008) – Oklahoma Christian University survived upset-minded St. Gregory's University for a 48-36 win in Sooner Athletic Conference play on Saturday night.
OC's only double-digit lead of the game was the final score after Kailan DeCamp hit a three pointer at the buzzer. The victory improves the Lady Eagles to 9-1 overall and 3-0 in SAC competition. SGU fell to 1-8 and 0-2.
Despite the Lady Eagles' offensive struggles (13-of-46 from the field), the team was excellent on defense all game long. OC held SGU to just 11-of-47 shooting for a 23-percent average.
The 36 points allowed was OC's second-fewest ever to SGU, trailing only a 58-35 victory in the Eagles' Nest last season. OC's 48-point output was its least ever against SGU. The Lady Eagles have won 13 games in a row over the Lady Cavaliers and lead the all-time series 23-4.
After going down 4-0 early in the game, OC bounced back to control the majority of the first half.
The Lady Eagles biggest lead of the half was eight points, but they had plenty of chances to make it bigger at the foul line. OC took 19 free throws in the half, but only made 11 for a 58-percent average.
The Lady Eagles' eight-point edge came at the 3:05 mark when Lindsey Gipson hit 1-of-2 charity tosses to make 21-13. OC was up 21-18 with one minute to play before three late foul shots from Hillary Duncan and Jordan Findley made it 24-18 at the break.
The Lady Eagle defense held SGU to only three field goals in 20 attempts (15 percent) during the first period. The Lady Cavaliers stayed in the game at the free-throw line where they were 10-of-16.
SGU used a 7-0 run to take its first lead since early in the first half at 28-27 by the 13:54 mark of the second stanza. Then OC quickly fired back with scores from Charlotte Heron and DeCamp to reestablish the advantage at 31-28 at 13:00.
The Lady Eagles' lead was never larger than five points over the next seven-plus minutes until Lisa Chenoweth scored a driving layup with 2:53 left to give OC a 40-34 cushion.
The Lady Eagles finally got some more breathing room with a free throw from DeCamp and post score from Kennedy to go up 43-36 by the one-minute point. OC's defense kept SGU off the scoreboard the rest of the way and the Lady Eagles added two free throws from Haley Myers and the buzzer-beater from DeCamp to take the 12-point victory.
Chenoweth was the only Lady Eagle in double figures with 11 points. She made 6-of-8 free-throw tries. Kennedy added nine points, Duncan had seven and DeCamp and Heron tallied six apiece. Abby Wolf led the Lady Cavaliers with 10 points.
The Lady Eagles round out 2008 play at home against Texas College at 6 p.m. on Dec. 12. OC reenters SAC play on Jan. 3 at John Brown University (Ark.).
