Oklahoma Christian University posted a stunning upset of 15th ranked John Brown University but lost to number one ranked Oklahoma City University in the Sooner Athletic Conference Women's Tournament at the Abe Lemons Arena of OCU on March 5 & 6.
The Lady Eagles pinned a 69-64 loss on John Brown (19-10) in the quarter final round behind standout performances of freshmen Katie Fariss and Jennifer Haynes but fell 89-70 to the top seeded Stars in the semi-finals.
Despite losing twice to John Brown during regular season play, the Lady Eagles took an early lead, fell behind in the second half but closed strong in the final minutes. With the score tied 64-all, Haynes' rebound and put back with 45 seconds to play gave the Lady Eagles their final lead. Another freshman, Sarah Stanley cushioned the margin with three free throws in the final 30 seconds.
Haynes led the Lady Eagles with 19 points and nine rebounds and Fariss recorded her third double-double of the season with 18 points and 12 rebounds. Lauren Decker contributed some clutch baskets in the second half to finish with 16 points.
In the OCU contest, the Lady Eagles fell behind early but regrouped with a 16-2 run to trail 34-47 at intermission. OC closed to within five, 42-47, three minutes deep in the final half, but the Stars pulled away on an 18-9 run to lead 65-52 with 11:00 left.
Unable to close the gap, the Lady Eagles fell to 19-14 overall. Decker led OC with 22 points, followed by Tasha Turney with 12 and Katie Fariss with 11.
