OCU scrapes past OC in overtime

The ninth-ranked OC women's basketball team lost a heartbreaker in overtime to third-ranked Oklahoma City, 82-76, on Saturday.

The game between the national heavyweights featured 10 lead changes and 16 ties. With OC trailing 58-55 late, Katie Fariss hit a three-point shot then Lauren Decker converted an old-fashioned three-point play with to give the Lady Eagles a 61-58 lead 1:22 left.

The teams traded free throws down the stretch, with Oklahoma Christian extending the lead to three once again when senior Tasha Turney sunk two foul shots with five seconds to play.

The Stars then pushed the ball to Alexander Kotta, whose three-point attempt from the corner banked in at the buzzer to send the game to overtime tied at 64.

The Stars were just 2-of-24 from three-point range before Kotta's last-second equalizer. But OCU made four more three-pointers in overtime (three by Kotta) to pull out the victory.

In her final home game, Turney scored a game-high 23 points and grabbed five rebounds. Fariss scored 17 and Decker 12. Rachel Martin scored six points and collected 14 rebounds. Kotta finished the game with a team-high 21 for OCU.

The Lady Eagles have secured a second-place finish in the Sooner Athletic Conference with a 21-8 overall record and a 14-4 mark in conference play. OCU improved to 27-2 overall and won the conference championship with an 18-0 league record.

Oklahoma Christian will play the winner of the Northwestern Oklahoma-Wayland Baptist first-round game in the SAC tournament quarterfinals on Friday (time TBA).
