CHICKASHA, Okla. (Feb. 19, 2009) - The Oklahoma Christian University men's basketball team won 73-58, while the Lady Eagles dropped a narrow 64-63 decision at Science and Arts of Oklahoma on Thursday night.
The Eagles have now won three-straight games to improve to 12-7 in the Sooner Athletic Conference and 19-8 overall. The Lady Eagles continued to have tough luck as they lost their seventh-straight outing to dip to 13-14 overall and 6-13 in the conference.
The Eagles started Thursday's game on a 25-7 run that was capped by an 11-0 burst midway through the first half.
USAO chipped at the deficit and pulled within 12 points (35-23) with less than a minute to play, but David Jackson canned a three pointer at the halftime buzzer to give OC a 40-25 lead at the break.
The Eagles worked their lead to 20 points (50-30) by the 14:45 mark of the second half when Jon Jonsson swished a triple. OC outscored USAO 18-11 over the next 10 minutes to take its biggest lead yet at 68-41.
The Drovers (9-15, 6-12) went on an 11-0 run in the closing two minutes to make the 15-point OC win appear closer than it actually was.
The Eagles enjoyed a balanced scoring effort that was paced by Jason Taylor's team-high 22 points. Taylor finished 10-of-15 from the field and collected six rebounds. Jeff Crocker scored 12 points, while Kyle Tefft and Chad Endres both had 10.
Tefft also etched his name into the OC record book by tying the school's single-season steals record of 86 (Terrance Gaines, 1988-89). The senior had two steals vs. USAO to extend his streak of a takeaway in every game this season. Tefft was third in the NAIA in steals per game at 3.2 entering Thursday's game.
The Eagles shot 56 percent from the field (30-54) and made 8-of-17 three-point attempts for 47 percent.
The Lady Eagles closed the first half of their game vs. USAO on a 19-4 run to take a 39-26 cushion to the locker room. Kailan DeCamp scored a layup with 26 seconds showing on the clock to seal OC's excellent first half.
The Lady Eagles clung to the lead through a big chunk of the second half, but the Lady Drovers finally went back on top 56-55 with 5:12 to play.
The teams traded five leads and played through two ties in the final five minutes. OC took a 61-58 edge with 2:22 left thanks to a Charlotte Heron putback. Then trailing 62-61, Haley Myers scored a critical bucket to put the Lady Eagles up one with 33 seconds to play.
But USAO's Ivaney Marques hit a jumper with 12 seconds left to make it 64-63 Lady Drovers, and OC couldn't regain the lead.
Brittney Kennedy led the Lady Eagles with 16 points and nine rebounds. Lisa Chenoweth scored 14 points, while Myers finished with 12.
The Eagles and Lady Eagles return to the Eagles' Nest on Saturday night to face rival Southern Nazarene (Okla.) at 6 and 8 p.m.
