Lady Eagles cruise, Eagles lose heartbreaker

The Oklahoma Christian women's basketball team remained tied atop the Sooner Athletic Conference by defeating the University of Science and Arts of Oklahoma 71-55 here Jan. 14.

The Lady Eagles (5-0, 12-4), who rank 10th nationally in rebound margin, outboarded the Drovers by 14 in the win.

Senior Tasha Turney turned in a double-double of 16 points on 7-of-12 shooting while also grabbing 11 rebounds.

Four Lady Eagles scored in double figures, led by senior Lauren Decker's 19. Decker also dished out eight assists in the game. Carlissa Plowden and Rachel Martin scored 15 points apiece.

In the men's contest, the close matchups of the past served as foreshadowing for yet another classic finish between the Eagles and Drovers.

The Eagles led 36-35 at halftime behind 41 percent shooting from the field. The second half saw seven lead changes and three ties as neither team led by more than four points.

With 31 seconds in the game, OC junior guard Keith Harris hit a three-pointer and was fouled to give the Eagles a 65-64 lead.

But after Harris missed his foul shot, USAO guard Marcus Hines penetrated the Eagle defense and scored with 17 seconds to play, lifting the Drovers to a 66-65 lead.

OC had one final chance, but Brady Page's 15-footer missed at the buzzer to give USAO the victory.

Page led all scorers with 25 points while Hines had 21. Harris had his fifth double-double of the season with 10 points and 11 rebounds.

The Eagles are now 3-2 in Sooner Athletic Conference play and 13-3 overall.

Both the Eagles and Lady Eagles will return to action this Thursday, Jan. 19 as they host Lubbock Christian. The women's game will tip at 6 p.m. with the men to follow at 8 p.m.
