Katy O'Steen scored 16 points as OC snapped a 10-game losing streak by beating John Brown on Thursday night.
OKLAHOMA CITY (Feb. 9, 2012) – Katy Clift and Katy O'Steen each scored 16 points and Oklahoma Christian beat John Brown (Ark.) 52-44 on Thursday night in the Eagles' Nest, snapping a 10-game losing streak.
Andee Wayne grabbed 15 rebounds and Logan McKee had eight – career highs for both – helping OC post a whopping 53-31 advantage on the boards that proved to be the difference in the game, as OC (8-16, 3-14 Sooner Athletic Conference) limited John Brown (12-13, 6-11) to one shot on many possessions.
O'Steen went 7-of-10 from the field while Clift went 8-of-8 from the free-throw line and hit a critical 3-pointer with 4:09 left that boosted OC's lead to 44-40.
John Brown was within 46-44 after Lindsey McHenry's basket with 2:17 left, but the Golden Eagles didn't score again. Clift and Logan McKee combined to go 6-of-6 from the line in the final 1:03 to seal the win for OC.
After the game, OC players hugged at midcourt while a near-capacity crowd cheered their approval.
"Where did that monkey go? It's running around here somewhere, because it's not on our backs anymore," OC coach Stephanie Findley said.
"It's a relief," she said. "Maybe it will help us relax a little bit. Everything just gets so tight, just wanting to win so bad. It's like you shoot yourself in the foot all the time, unintentionally. It's a big relief and a pretty good team effort – pretty balanced scoring and we had a lot of people rebounding.
"We're just trying to go out and play better and tonight we did."
OC didn't shoot particularly well at 30.6 percent (15 of 49) but the Lady Eagles' defense held John Brown to 25.4-percent shooting (16 of 63).
"It was a good effort by everybody on defense of trying to limit them to one shot, then pulling down the rebound," Findley said. "The key to that was Andee getting 15 and Logan coming in and getting eight from a guard spot."
OC jumped to leads of 9-3 and 16-7 during the first 11 minutes and led 23-20 at halftime. John Brown took the lead twice during the second half, the final time at 40-39 on a 3-pointer by Lauren Rogers. O'Steen's basket with 4:57 left put OC ahead for good at 41-40 and Clift followed with her 3-pointer.
Sierra Shipley went 4-of-8 from 3-point range and led John Brown with 15 points, while Rogers added 13 points for the Golden Eagles.
OC's next game will be Saturday at Rogers State.
