Carli Covalt scored 13 points to lead OC in a 103-44 loss at No. 2-ranked Oklahoma City University on Thursday.
OKLAHOMA CITY (Jan. 26, 2012) – Lauren Gober scored 15 points and led seven Oklahoma City University players in double figures as the No. 2-ranked Stars rolled past Oklahoma Christian 103-44 on Thursday night at Abe Lemons Fieldhouse.
OCU (18-1, 12-1) dealt the Lady Eagles their worst loss in the program's history, with the 59-point margin surpassing the 55-point gap in a 96-41 loss to Oklahoma Baptist on Jan. 5, 2008. OC (7-13, 2-11) lost its seventh straight game overall and 11th straight to the Stars.
Carli Covalt and Katy O'Steen scored 13 points each for OC, but no one else reached double figures for the Lady Eagles, who posted their lowest point total of the season. Katy Clift, OC's leading scorer, scored four points on 2-of-6 shooting and didn't record at least one 3-pointer for the first time this season.
The Lady Eagles jumped to a 7-2 lead on a basket by Clift with 17:11 left in the first half, but went almost seven minutes without a field goal. OCU seized control with a 22-1 run and led 24-8 after a layup by Desiree Jeffries at the 12:26 mark.
OCU's pressing, trapping defense gave the Lady Eagles trouble throughout. The Stars built their lead to 62-22 by halftime and led by as many as 61 points in the second half. OCU outrebounded the Lady Eagles 50-33 – grabbing 22 offensive rebounds – and shot 51.9 percent from the field (40 of 77). OC shot 28.6 percent (16 of 56) and committed 23 turnovers, compared to seven for the Stars.
All 10 of OCU's players scored. Kayla McKenzie scored 14 points, while Philicia Kelly had 13 and Tiffany Goldwire and Dietra Caldwell scored 12 each. Jeffries and Cara Pugh scored 10 each, with Pugh grabbing 10 rebounds.
OC's next game will be Saturday at 3 p.m., when the Lady Eagles host Mid-America Christian, a team they beat 75-71 earlier this season.
