Katy O'Steen scored 22 points on 10-of-16 shooting in an 88-59 loss to Oklahoma City University.
OKLAHOMA CITY (Dec. 31, 2011) – Nicollette Smith scored 21 points on 7-of-11 shooting and No. 1-ranked Oklahoma City University beat Oklahoma Christian 88-59 on Saturday afternoon in the Eagles' Nest.
OCU (11-0, 5-0 Sooner Athletic Conference) trailed only once and improved its winning streak over OC (6-6, 1-4) to 10 games. The deep and talented Stars used all 10 of their players liberally, with three of them reaching double figures in scoring.
Center Katy O'Steen led the Lady Eagles with 22 points of 10-of-16 shooting, but OCU's fierce pressing defense limited the offensive opportunities for OC's top scorer, Katy Clift. The senior guard scored six points on 2-of-7 shooting and went 1-of-5 from 3-point range.
As a team, the Lady Eagles struggled from behind the arc, going 2-for-17 (11.8 percent), and committed 31 turnovers. There weren't many bright spots for the Lady Eagles, but coach Stephanie Findley said she was proud of O'Steen's effort.
"Katy is tough," Findley said. "She wants to win and she goes out and works hard."
O'Steen gave OC its only lead of the game, scoring the Lady Eagles' first two baskets to make it 4-2. A 3-pointer by OCU's Tiffany Goldwire put the Stars up 7-4 and they gradually built their lead to 43-23 by halftime.
The Lady Eagles scored the first six points of the second half – four of those by O'Steen – to pull within 43-29 and were as close as 45-31 after two free throws by O'Steen with 17:51 left. But OCU answered with a 12-3 run, with Smith's 3-pointer with 12:53 left putting the Stars up 57-34.
OC got no closer than 20 points the rest of the way. Makenzie Brown was the only other OC player to reach double figures in scoring, with 10 points.
Desiree Jeffries had 17 points and nine rebounds for OCU, while Taylor Booze added 13 points.
OC will visit Mid-America Christian on Monday before returning home Thursday to host Southern Nazarene.
