OKLAHOMA CITY, Okla. (Nov. 22, 2010) – The Oklahoma Christian women's basketball team opened up conference play with a 67-53 win over Northwestern Oklahoma State University on Monday night in the Nest.
As things got underway, the OC women utilized a 9-3 run against the Northwestern Oklahoma ladies to put up an early six-point lead in the first two minutes of the game. Despite the early lead, however, the Lady Rangers responded with an 8-0 run to take the lead with 12:05 left to play.
The Lady Eagles fell to a four-point deficit with 8:29 remaining on the game clock before they were able to regain a two-point lead from a three-point basket by Ayanna Jackson.
During the last minutes of the half, the OC women's squad was able to create a seven-point advantage three times with critical baskets from Carli Covalt and Katy O'Steen. The Lady Eagles finished the period with a five-point lead as they headed into halftime.
The Lady Eagles continued their momentum into the second period and pushed to a 10-point lead with 14:28 left to play from back-to-back three pointers by Katy Clift.
From that point, the OC women only moved forward as they continued their 10-0 run against the Lady Rangers. With 4:29 showing on the game clock, the Lady Eagles created their largest lead of the game at 61-42 with a 19-point lead.
As the Lady Rangers fought back, the were able to cut the deficit to 14 points before time expired, leaving the Lady Eagles with a 67-53 victory.
Clift recorded a 22-point game to lead the Lady Eagles as she netted six baskets from behind the arc in addition to grabbing six rebounds.
O'Steen and Covalt tallied another 14 and eight points, respectively, for the Lady Eagles as they played a tough game in the paint. Additionally, O'Steen grabbed six rebounds while Covalt grabbed four and made another four steals.
Perimeter players Jackson and Krista Stevens added respective 13 and four point performances while Stevens led OC with 12 rebounds and made another four assists.
The victory puts the Lady Eagles on a three game win streak and gives them a 5-1 record overall while opening conference play at 1-0.
The OC women's and men's basketball teams will next head to the road on Thursday, Dec. 2, to face John Brown University (Ark.). The women's tip-off is scheduled for 6 p.m. with the men's to follow at 8 p.m.
