OKLAOMA CITY, Oka. (Feb. 3, 2011) The Oklahoma Christian women's basketball team beat out Mid-America Christian University (Okla.) on Thursday night with an 81-72 cross-town victory.
The Lady Eagles took to the lead first after Carli Covalt netted a basket in the paint just seconds after the tip. After a tie up, the Lady Eagles pushed to a five-point margin with a three from Krista Stevens and another inside basket from Covalt.
OC held the lead for the first six and half minutes before the Lady Evangels jumped into a one-point lead with 13:33 to play.
With the scored tied up 12-12 at 12:26 showing on the clock, the Mid-America Christian women netted seven unanswered points to lead the Lady Eagles 19-12 with 10:14 till the half.
The OC women responded with a run of their own, however, as the Lady Eagles went on a 17-2 sprint to take an eight-point lead with 7:14 still left to play.
The Lady Eagles held the lead through the remainder of the period and increased the margin to 10 points on multiple occasions.
During the second period, the Lady Eagles never trailed as they quickly increased their lead to 12 less than two minutes into the half.
At 14:44 showing on the clock, the OC women took their largest lead of the game at 15 points. A later 10-2 run by the Lady Evangels got them within six points of the Lady Eagles, but the OC women responded with the same to take back a 14-point advantage.
With 1:53 till the buzzer, the MACU women cut the Lady Eagles lead to just five points, but a determined OC squad held the Lady Evangels from coming any closer and finished out the game with a nine-point victory at 81-72.
Katy Clift paced OC through the game with a total 25 points for the evening in addition to three assists. Covalt continued to do her job down low and tallied 16 points for the game.
Stevens added another 12 points, sevens rebounds, and three assists while Katy O'Steen put up another nine points for the Lady Eagles. Ayanna Jackson and Andee Wayne each scored eight points apiece.
The victory takes the Lady Eagles to an 11-12 overall record and to 5-10 for the conference. The OC women will join the men's team as they host Oklahoma City University in the Eagles' Nest on Saturday. Women's tip-off is schedule for 6 p.m. with the men's to follow at 8 p.m.
