OKLAHOMA CITY, Okla. (Feb. 17, 2011) – The Oklahoma Christian women's basketball team played well against No. 19 Lubbock Christian University (Texas) on Thursday night as they claimed an 82-69 victory in the Nest.
The Lady Eagles took to the hardwood ready to play the No. 19 Lady Chaparrals as they battled confidently from the start.
After a free throw by Ayanna Jackson and a basket in the paint from Katy O'Steen, OC took the first lead at 3-0. LCU responded quickly with a 6-0 run, however, to leave the Lady Eagles at a three-point deficit with 15:12 to play.
Over the next six minutes, the two squads exchanged baskets and leads with neither team leading by more than three points.
With 8:57 showing on the clock, the Lady Eagles trailed by a point at 14-13 before storming on a 20-0 run to lead the Lady Chaps by 19 points with just 43 seconds left till the half. LCU showed trouble scoring from the field with a mere 22 percent accuracy.
A last second basket in the paint from the Lady Chaps cut the Lady Eagle lead to 17 as the squads headed to the locker room with an OC advantage at 33-16.
As the second half got underway, the Lady Eagles showed no mercy to the LCU women as they continued to outshoot the Lady Chaps from the field.
Less than two minutes into the period, OC pushed to a 20-point margin at 40-20. The Lady Chaps responded with a 7-1 run, cutting the Lady Eagle margin to 14 points with 15:45 to play.
Despite various efforts to cut the OC lead, the Lady Chaps struggled to get any closer than 14 points within the Lady Eagles.
With 11:15 remaining, the Lady Eagles regained a 20-point margin and moments later created a 25-point gap with 9:50 left on the clock. LCU responded with seven unanswered points to cut the margin to 18 a minute later.
As the clock continued to count down, the Lady Eagles held the Lady Chaps at bay, as LCU was unable to come within a 14-point gap until the last minute of the game. The final LCU trey put the Lady Chaps at a 13-point deficit before the clock ran out, leaving the Lady Eagles with an 82-69 victory.
OC's Katy Clift and Mica Havens paced the Lady Eagles through the evening with 20 and 18 points, respectively. Additionally, both Clift and Havens tallied five rebounds.
O'Steen was valuable down low as she managed 13 points and an impressive 18 rebounds for a double-double performance.
The win improves the Lady Eagles to 12-15 overall and to 6-13 for conference play. The OC women's and men's teams will stay at home for their upcoming matches against Wayland Baptist University (Texas) scheduled for Saturday at 1 p.m. and 3 p.m., respectively.
