EDMOND, Okla. - Following a 4-0 opening weekend, Oklahoma Christian will face its second four-match tournament in as many weeks with the Rosella Meier UNK Fall Classic hosted by No. 6 Nebraska-Kearney. The Eagles will begin weekend action with Chadron State College Friday, Sept. 13 at 10 a.m.
Day one of the Fall Classic will finish with OC taking on Missouri Southern Friday at 2 p.m. before returning to the Health and Sports Center to take on tournament-host No. 6 Nebraska-Kearney Saturday, Sept. 14 at 12 p.m. The four-match weekend will conclude with the University of Mary Saturday at 4 p.m.Â
EAGLE OUTLOOK
Oklahoma Christian went undefeated through its first four matches to open a season for the first time in the NCAA Division II era, including sweeping tournament-host Pittsburg State and Southwest Baptist in back-to-back contests. As of Thursday, Sept. 12, OC is the only undefeated team in the Lone Star Conference among teams who have played at least one match.
During the final match of the season-opening Gorilla Classic against Arkansas Tech, senior transfer outside hitter
Riley Daugherty claimed her 1000th career dig. The former All-Conference honoree out of Colorado Mesa now has 1002 digs and 923 kills. Daugherty is on pace to reach the 1000-kill threshold at next weekend's LSC Challenge in San Antonio, Texas Sept. 19-21.
True freshman
Chloe Jones was named the LSC Freshman of the Week after her performance at the two-day classic which earned her Tournament MVP honors. Jones led all Eagles with 57 kills and a 3.56 kills-per-set rate, which is fourth in the conference after opening weekend. Jones joined Daugherty and fellow outside
Katy Geurin as All-Tournament recipients. Geurin is currently fifth in the league with a .361 hitting percentage.
Since the program's reinstatement in 2020, Oklahoma Christian has only ever posted one five-match winning streak in 2021 and a six-match winning streak in 2023, which is OC's longest winning streak during in that time span. The Eagles have never won seven matches in a row in the NCAA Division II era.    Â
SCOUTING CHADRON STATE
Chadron State of the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference is 0-4, having won just one set in those four matches. Sophomore middle Kally Kirkwood is leading the offense with 22 kills while fellow middle Bella Adams is hitting a team-high .241 with 20 kills. As a team, the Eagles out of Nebraska are hitting .089 while their opponents are hitting .275.
SCOUTING MISSOURI SOUTHERN
Missouri Southern has managed four sets out of its first four matches, but match Chadron with an 0-4 record. The Lions come into 2024 off a 16-15 campaign, including an 8-12 record in the Mid-America Intercollegiate Athletics Association. Senior outside Alana Moesch is responsible for 27 percent of MSSU's kills with 52 winners, including a 25-kill performance against Southern Nazarene to open the year.Â
SCOUTING No. 6 NEBRASKA-KEARNEY
Last year's NCAA Tournament qualifier opens the 2024 season with 15 straight sets as No. 6 Nebraska-Kearney has failed to relinquish a set in its first five matches. The Lopers have not allowed an opponent to score more than 18 points in any given set in its last four matches and have allowed 20 just once. Tournament-host Kearney has not lost a match at its home tournament since 2010.Â
SCOUTING MARY
The University of Mary brings a 1-3 into the weekend, having beaten Lone Star Conference-foe Cameron, 3-1. The Marauders have picked up at least one set in every match they have played, including falling to Fort Hays State, 3-2. Mary is holding its opponents to a .207 hitting percentage and 12.0 kills per set while UM is recording 11.6 kills per set.  Â
