EDMOND, Okla. - Following a five-game non-conference slate, Oklahoma Christian will now begin Lone Star Conference play this week as OC will cross several state lines to do so. The Eagles will begin in Portales, N.M., with Eastern New Mexico Thursday, Dec. 5 at 8 p.m. CT before heading east to Canyon, Texas, to face No. 2 West Texas A&M Saturday, Dec. 7 at 3 p.m.
EAGLE OUTLOOK (3-2, 0-0 LSC)
Oklahoma Christian enters conference action with a 3-2 record, including wins over in-region foe Western Colorado, 71-63, and in-state adversary East Central, 83-76. The Eagles have fallen to ECU's conference peers Southwestern Oklahoma State and Harding, however, 76-67 and 98-87, respectively. Through five games, OC is 3-0 at home and 0-2 on the road.
Despite OC's most recent loss to the Bisons,
Keyondre Young became the first Eagle to score 20 or more points in three consecutive games since Jordan Box in the 2018-19 campaign. During that stretch, the DePaul transfer guard is averaging 26 points per game and is shooting 15-of-21 (71.4 percent) from beyond the arc, having made five triples in each of those three games. The former Oklahoma high school standout is currently second in the Lone Star with 20.0 points per game.
In addition to Young,
Marco Foster (16.2 ppg) and
Javon Grant (13.6 ppg) make up the Eagles who are averaging double-figures among players who have played at least four games this season. That trio has Oklahoma Christian averaging 82.8 points per game, which is fifth in the LSC. Similarly, both Eastern New Mexico (93.0 ppg) and West Texas A&M (93.8 ppg) come into this weekend as the top scoring offenses in the league while WTAMUÂ (75.2 ppg) and OC (78.0 ppg) rank in the bottom third in defensive scoring. The Greyhounds are fifth in defensive scoring at 68.2 ppg.
Recent history has not been on the side of the Eagles for this road trip to kick off LSC play, with OCÂ having lost four straight to the Greyhounds and seven straight to the Buffs. Oklahoma Christian has not beaten ENMU in New Mexico in the NCAA DII era, with its last such victory coming back in 1977. The Eagles have never beaten West Texas in Canyon.Â
SCOUTING EASTERN NEW MEXICO (4-2, 0-1 LSC)
Both of Eastern New Mexico's losses this season have come against NABC Top-25 opponents, including a four-point overtime loss to No. 2 West Texas A&M. In their four victories, the Greyhounds are averaging 102 points per game, including a 93-84 win over then-No. 19 Metro State. Through six games, ENMU is 3-1 at Steve Loy Foundation Arena and 1-1 away from home.
The high-scoring Greyhounds boast six players currently averaging in double figures, led by senior forward Mario Whitley at 17.8 points per game. In ENMU's overtime loss to West Texas, Whitley scored 21 points on 9-of-15 shooting while also grabbing 15 rebounds. In addition to Whitley's scoring, the Saginaw, Mich., native has Eastern leading the league with 43.8 rebounds per game.
SCOUTING No. 2 WEST TEXAS A&M (6-0, 1-0 LSC)
The Buffs opened the year ranked No. 3 in the National Association of Basketball Coaches poll and have risen to No. 2 after winning each of its first six games by an average of 18.7 points, including victories over then-No. 25 Ferris State and then-(RV) UNC Pembroke. The Buffs are currently one of eight teams in the most recent NABC Top-25 poll with a 6-0 record or better.
West Texas A&M is ranked 13th in Division II at 93.8 points per game, despite scoring fewer than 80 points in each of its first two games. In its last four contests, WTAMU is averaging 101.8 points per game. During that stretch, two-time LSC Offensive Player of the Week Ahamed Mohammed is averaging 21.3 points per game as part of an active five-game streak of 20 points or more.
