KINGSVILLE, Texas (May 8, 2022) –
Dylan Burrows finished second in a tightly packed 800-meter final to lead Oklahoma Christian on the final day of the Lone Star Conference Outdoor Track and Field Championships at Javelina Stadium.
Eight other OC individuals, plus a relay team, earned team points for the Eagles. OC finished sixth of 11 teams in the meet with 55 points, just one behind fifth-place Dallas Baptist (Texas). West Texas A&M won the title with 214 points.
Burrows, a sophomore from Melbourne, Australia, won last year's LSC 800 title in Canyon, Texas, and he was near the lead throughout the race on Saturday. Timon Kemboi of Texas A&M-Commerce held the lead midway through the race, but faded to fifth on the final lap in the hot, humid conditions in south Texas.
Burrows, sitting in second at the midway mark, wasn't able to hold off a hard-charging Butare Rugenerwa of West Texas A&M, who zoomed from seventh to first over the final 400 meters to win in 1:55.07. Burrows was second in 1:55.36 – due to the conditions, more than six seconds off his season best – and the next six runners crossed the line within the next 2.3 seconds.
Team points for OC came from almost every event in which the Eagles had a representative on Saturday. In the javelin, junior
Jonathan Olsson of Emporia, Kan., was fifth (172 feet, 10 inches/52.69 meters) among 11 throwers, while sophomore
Brandon Zepf of Port Orchard, Wash., was seventh (162 feet, 7 inches/49.56 meters).
Sophomore
Chaney Martin of West Plains, Mo., a day after a fourth-place finish in the decathlon, placed fifth among 17 men in the pole vault with a mark of 14 feet, 7½ inches (4.46 meters).
OC had two scorers in the 1,500 meters – sophomore
Owen Pearce of Kingman, Kan. (fifth in 4:22.21) and sophomore
Ethan Anthony of Mornington, Australia (eighth in 4:23.95). Joining Burrows in scoring in the 800 was junior
Keiontae Williamson of Vernon, Texas, who was seventh in 1:57.06.
Sprinter
Verrell McBride, a junior from Norman, Okla., finished sixth in the 100 meters (10.77 seconds) and seventh in the 200 meters (21.96 seconds). Distance specialist
Colton Meyers, a senior from Allen, Texas, took seventh in the 5,000 meters in 15:22.42, just two days after a third-place finish in the 10,000 meters.
To close the meet, the Eagles' 4x400-meter relay team of sophomore
Camden Miller of Sand Springs, Okla., Williamson, Burrows and freshman
Elijah Edwards of Mustang, Okla., took fifth among nine teams in 3:18.08.
The Eagles are scheduled to compete in a to-be-determined last-chance meet next Friday and-or Saturday.
