OKLAHOMA CITY (April 17, 2022) – Posting one of the fastest times of the outdoor track and field season in his signature event earned Oklahoma Christian middle-distance runner
Dylan Burrows recognition Sunday as the Eagle of the Week.
Burrows, a sophomore from Melbourne, Australia, ran a career-best time of 1:49.17 in the 800 meters in the Bryan Clay Invitational in Azusa, Calif., on Thursday. His time shattered his previous best by more than a second and was the ninth-best this season in NCAA Division II, easily meeting the provisional qualifying standard for next month's Division II Outdoor Championships.
Burrows finished 22nd in a field of 198 men, which included many NCAA Division I runners and a good number of top Division II and NAIA runners.
Others considered for Eagle of the Week included:
-- Tristyn Hamilton, softball: The sophomore outfielder from Durant starred for the 16th-ranked Eagles in a 9-1, 13-0 sweep of visiting Northwestern Oklahoma State on Tuesday that extended OC's winning streak to 20 games, an ongoing school record. In the doubleheader, Hamilton hit .667 with a triple, a double, seven RBIs and two runs scored while posting a 1.167 slugging percentage. In the second game, batting in the ninth spot in OC's order, she had a career-high six RBIs – matching the fourth-highest single-game total in program history. She hit a bases-loaded triple in the second inning that started the Eagles' scoring and added a RBI single in the fourth inning and a two-run double in the fourth inning.
-- Chaney Martin, men's track and field: Martin led a 1-2 finish for OC in the decathlon at the Sooner Invitational and Multi in Norman. The sophomore from West Plains, Mo., was sixth among 15 men after the first day on Friday, but he soared up the standings on Saturday. He won the pole vault (13 feet, 1½ inches/4.00 meters), took third in the javelin (145 feet, 8 inches/44.40 meters) and finished second in the final event, the 1,500 meters (4:36.36). The last result vaulted him past teammate
Alex Samples into first place with a score of 6,346 points.
-- Kenya Bailey, women's track and field: The junior from Ponca City ran her career-best time of 4:51.99 in the 1,500 meters in the Sooner Invitational in Norman, despite battling temperatures in the mid-50s, overcast skies and a brisk wind. She finished sixth among 35 women in the race.
-- Isaiah Alvarenga, baseball: The sophomore right-hander from Grapevine, Texas, put together another strong start that helped OC salvage one win in its series at Texas-Tyler. In the series finale, he limited the Patriots to one run and four hits and struck out six batters in six innings to earn the pitching win.
The Eagle of the Week award recognizes the top performer in OC athletics for the previous week. The honor is presented each week at least one OC athletic team is in competition.
