NORMAN, Okla. (April 16, 2022) – Oklahoma Christian's
Chaney Martin and
Alex Samples posted a 1-2 finish for the Eagles in the decathlon as the Sooner Invitational and Multi ended Saturday at Oklahoma's John Jacobs Track.
Martin, a sophomore from West Plains, Mo., began the day in sixth place (among 15 men) in the decathlon, a 10-event discipline. He quickly moved up the standings by winning the pole vault (13 feet, 1½ inches/4.00 meters), taking third in the javelin (145 feet, 8 inches/44.40 meters) and finishing second in the final event, the 1,500 meters (4:36.36). The last result vaulted him into first place with a score of 6,346 points.
Samples, a sophomore from Edmond, started Saturday in first place and never fell below second, finishing with 6,234 points. After winning two events on Friday, his top events Saturday were the discus (fifth at 103 feet, 4 inches/31.51 meters), the pole vault (fourth at 11 feet, 5¾ inches/3.50 meters) and the 1,500 (fourth in 5:00.16).
Martin and Samples each beat seven NCAA Division I competitors.
Four other Eagles recorded top-10 event finishes.
Keiontae Williamson, a junior from Vernon, Texas, took third among 43 runners in the 800 meters with a time of 1:54.79. In the 1,500 meters, sophomore
Colten Brown of Boise City (4:04.18) and sophomore
Ethan Anthony of Mornington, Australia (4:04.87) finished seventh and eighth, respectively, in a field of 34.
Wyatt Theil, a sophomore from Stillwater, took seventh in the high jump at 6 feet, 2¾ inches (1.90 meters).
Other competitors for the Eagles on Saturday included freshmen
Sam Fisher (22.69 seconds) and
Isaac Koomson (23.87 seconds) in the 200 meters, freshman
Elijah Edwards (1:00.05) in the 400-meter hurdles and freshman
Kameron Shropshire (114 feet, 3 inches/34.84 meters) in the discus.
The Eagles will be back at the same facility in Norman next Friday and Saturday for the John Jacobs Invitational meet.
