OKLAHOMA CITY (April 10, 2022) – Clutch hits to secure wins in two games and a near-perfect batting average earned Oklahoma Christian softball player Kyle Janzen recognition Sunday as the Eagle of the Week.
Janzen, a sophomore utility player from Moore, starred for the 20th-ranked Eagles as they swept home doubleheaders from Texas-Permian Basin (9-0 and 2-1 on Friday) and Western New Mexico (3-1 and 13-0 on Sunday). The Eagles extended their winning streak to a school-record 18 games and moved into a tie for first place in the rugged Lone Star Conference, the toughest league in NCAA Division II.
She went 6 of 7, a stellar .857 batting average, to go with a double, a triple, a home run, nine RBIs, three walks, three runs scored and two sacrifice flies. Janzen posted an on-base percentage of .750 and an otherworldly slugging percentage of 1.857.
Locked in a 1-1 game with UTPB on Friday, Janzen delivered a ground-rule double to score pinch-runner
Tristyn Hamilton with what proved to be the decisive run. That came after she hit two run-scoring singles in the opener.
On Sunday against Western New Mexico, the Eagles again found themselves tied 1-1 in the sixth inning when Janzen smacked a two-out home run to straightaway center field, providing the margin of victory against the Mustangs. OC won the second game comfortably, with Janzen driving in three runs with two sacrifice flies and a RBI double during a seven-run fourth-inning outburst.
Others considered for Eagle of the Week included:
-- Grace Anderson, softball: Anderson pitched OC's first no-hitter in more than three years and it was a perfect game, as the freshman right-hander from Tishomingo retired all 15 Western New Mexico batters in the Eagles' 13-0 win. She also started and allowed only two hits and one run in the 2-1 win over UTPB. She lowered her season ERA to 2.17 with the two performances.
-- Tanner White, baseball: White hit .533 (8 of 15) with two home runs, six RBIs, a .600 on-base percentage and a 1.000 slugging percentage as OC swept a four-game series from Texas-Permian Basin. On Senior Day on Saturday, the senior outfielder from El Dorado, Kan., hit a walk-off two-run homer in the bottom of the seventh inning for a 6-5 win in the opener, then connected on a grand slam during a seven-run fifth inning of a 17-11 win in the second game.
-- Dylan Burrows, men's track and field: Burrows posted a NCAA Division II provisional qualifying mark while winning the 800 meters on Saturday in Wichita State's K.T. Woodman Invitational at Cessna Stadium. The sophomore from Melbourne, Australia, won the 39-man race with a time of 1:50.91, more than 1.6 seconds faster than the runner-up. That time ranks 17th in Division II this season.
-- Caroline Schwab, women's track and field: Running not far from her home in Andover, Kan., Schwab set a school record of 11:30.06 to finish fourth among 20 women in Wichita State's. K.T. Woodman Classic on Friday night. The junior broke the former mark of 12:01.89, held since 2011 by Erin Sesemann.
-- Oskari Nikku, men's golf: Competing against arguably the toughest field in NCAA Division II men's golf this season, Nikku posted a career-best sixth-place finish (shooting 70-68-74--212) in West Florida's Argonaut Invitational at Pensacola Country Club in Pensacola, Fla. Of the 17 teams in the tournament, 11 were ranked in the top 25 and three others received votes. Nikku, a freshman from Tuusula, Finland, led the tournament for a time during the second round -- during which he had seven birdies over his first 11 holes en route to a 4-under 68 -- and his 15 birdies over three rounds ranked second in the 93-man field. He led No. 8-ranked OC to a third-place tournament finish.
