OKLAHOMA CITY (Jan. 30, 2022) – Setting a school record in one of indoor track and field's most grueling events while posting a NCAA Division II provisional qualifying score earned Oklahoma Christian multi-events competitor Chaney Martin recognition Sunday as the Eagle of the Week.

Martin, a sophomore from West Plains, Mo., starred for the Eagles in the Washburn Open, held Friday and Saturday in Topeka, Kan. He set a school record of 4,939 points in the heptathlon, a seven-event discipline that includes competition in the 60 meters, long jump, shot put, high jump, 60-meter hurdles, pole vault and 1,000 meters.

He finished second among the 13 competitors in the 60 meters with a career-best time of 7.19 seconds on Friday. On Saturday, he took third in the pole vault at 14 feet, 9 inches (4.50 meters) and won the final event, the 1,000, in 2:45.50, to leap into fourth place in the overall standings.

His score met the Division II provisional standard and currently ranks 16th nationally. It also broke the former OC mark of 4,783 points, set by Austin Wallace in 2014 at the National Christian College Athletic Association Indoor Championships in Bourbonnais, Ill.

Others considered for Eagle of the Week included:

-- Victor Rosado, men's swimming: In his first two meets for OC, Rosado set two school records and posted three NCAA Division II B qualifying times as the Eagles beat William Jewell (Mo.) and pushed No. 3-ranked Drury (Mo.) before falling in duals. On Friday against William Jewell, the freshman from St. Petersburg, Fla., won the 200-yard butterfly in 1:49.97, breaking that school record. On Saturday against Drury, he won two events, the 1,000 freestyle in 9:22.65 (a school record by more than 15 seconds) and the 500 freestyle in 4:34.58. All those times met the NCAA B standard.

-- Drew Tennial, men's basketball: Tennial, a sophomore from Edmond, played 42 minutes, scored 21 points (just one off his career high), grabbed nine rebounds and hit a game-winning layup with 1.4 seconds left in overtime as OC edged Arkansas-Fort Smith 84-83. Tennial scored the Eagles' final nine points in overtime and also had three steals.

-- Cheyenne Parks, women's swimming: Parks led the Eagles in duals against North Texas, William Jewell and No. 3-ranked Drury. At Division I North Texas on Wednesday, the sophomore from Guthrie won the "quadathlon" portion of the meet, in which swimmers each swam a 100-yard butterfly, a 100 backstroke, a 100 breaststroke and a 100 freestyle, then combined the times. (Hers was 4:09.21.) On Friday against William Jewell, she won both the 200 freestyle (in a school-record 1:52.86, meeting the Division II B time standard) and 100 butterfly (57.13 seconds). Parks was OC's only event winner against Drury, winning the 100 backstroke in 57.68 seconds and finishing second in the 500 freestyle in 5:02.16, another B-cut time.

-- Dylan Burrows, men's track and field: The sophomore from Melbourne, Australia, posted Division II provisional qualifying times in two events at the Washburn Open on Saturday. He finished first among 60 runners in the 800 meters with a time of 1:52.18, which ranks 19th this season in Division II. He also anchored OC's 4x400 relay team, and the squad that included Coby Trevino, Keiontae Williamson and Camden Miller posted a time of 3:16.06, which ranks 14th in Division II.

-- Ashanti Day, women's basketball: Day, a freshman from Moore who had scored a combined 18 points in her first six games with the Eagles, exploded for 34 points – the second-highest single-game total this season by a Lone Star Conference player – to go with six steals, six assists and four rebounds in an 84-75 loss to Arkansas-Fort Smith. She played all 40 minutes and hit 7 of 12 3-point shots while going 10 of 19 from the field. Her 34 points were the most by an OC player since Addy Clift scored 38 in a loss at St. Mary's (Texas) on Feb. 16, 2019. In addition to Day's points, her steal total was the eighth-best this season by a LSC player. She also had nine points, seven assists and four rebounds as OC lost 72-60 at UAFS on Tuesday.

The Eagle of the Week award recognizes the top performer in OC athletics for the previous week. The honor is presented each week at least one OC athletic team is in competition.
