TOPEKA, Kan. (Jan. 29, 2022) –
Chaney Martin shattered Oklahoma Christian's school record in the heptathlon and joined
Dylan Burrows and the Eagles' 4x400-meter relay team in posting NCAA Division II provisional qualifying marks/times in the Washburn Open on Saturday.
Martin, a sophomore from West Plains, Mo., finished the final three events of the heptathlon – the 60-meter hurdles, the pole vault and the 1,000 meters – inside the Washburn Indoor Athletic Facility. He won the 1,000 meters in 2:45.50, took third in the pole vault at 14 feet, 9 inches (4.50 meters) and fifth in the 60 hurdles in 8.73 seconds.
He finished third in the 13-man heptathlon field with 4,939 points. That score met the Division II provisional standard and currently ranks 16th nationally. It also broke the former OC mark of 4,783, set by Austin Wallace in 2014 at the National Christian College Athletic Association Indoor Championships in Bourbonnais, Ill.
Burrows, a sophomore from Melbourne, Australia, played a key role in two other provisional qualifying efforts. He took top honors among 60 men in the 800 meters, winning in 1:52.18, a time that ranks 19th this season in Division II. His teammate
Keiontae Williamson, a junior from Vernon, Texas, posted a career-best time of 1:57.67 to finish 12th.
OC last qualified for the Division II Indoor Championships in the 4x400 relay in 2018, but the Eagles could be in position to do so again after the quartet of
Coby Trevino, Williamson,
Camden Miller and Burrows finished third with a time of 3:16.06, meeting the provisional qualifying standard. That time ranks 14th in Division II this season, with 12 teams expected to be in the field for the national meet.
In the 3,000 meters, the Eagles had three runners finish in the top 13 in the 56-man field. Sophomore
Owen Pearce of Kingman, Kan., was ninth in 8:28.20 and senior
Colton Meyers of Allen, Texas, was 12th in 8:41.52. Both posted career-best times for that distance. One spot behind Meyers was sophomore
Colten Brown of Boise City, Okla., who finished in 8:42.92.
Both OC entrants in the mile also posted career-best times. Junior
Jelte van Atten of Leiden, Netherlands was 21st of 52 runners in 4:19.11 while
Austin McNair, a sophomore from Denton, Texas, was 29th in 4:25.70.
Trevino, a junior from Tuttle, Okla., finished 10th among 53 men in the 400 meters in a career-best 49.35 seconds, with Miller, a sophomore from Sand Springs, Okla., one spot behind in 49.59 seconds. In the 60 meters, junior
Verrell McBride of Norman, Okla. – who tied OC's 200-meter indoor record of 21.72 seconds on Friday – finished 10th among 31 sprinters in the 60 meters in 6.96 seconds.
The Eagles' top field-event performer was junior
Jonathan Olsson of Emporia, Kan., who placed eighth of 40 throwers in the shot put with a mark of 47 feet, 7 inches (14.50 meters).
The Eagles will wrap up the regular season of indoor track and field on Feb. 11-12 in the Indoor Gorilla Classic in Pittsburg, Kan.
