OKLAHOMA CITY (Jan. 23, 2022) – Oklahoma Christian Ultimate player
Jonathan Costello joined a pair of teammates as an All-American when he was named this weekend to
the second-team list as selected by the website Ultiworld.com.
Costello, a senior from Highland Village, Texas, was a key cog for the Eagles, who won the national title at the USA Ultimate Division III Championships last month in Norco, Calif. During three bracket-play matches in the national tournament, he recorded six goals and six assists, totals that ranked fifth and eighth, respectively, among all players in the event.
In the
title match, a 15-12 win over previously unbeaten Middlebury (Vt.), he had one goal, two assists and one D. He had three goals and two assists in a 15-11
quarterfinal win over Whitman (Wash.) and two goals and two assists in
the semifinals, in which OC beat top-seeded and previously unbeaten Richmond 14-11.
He provided a strong complement to OC's stars, graduate student
Kyle Henke and junior
Elliott Moore, who
earlier were named to Ultiworld's
first-team All-America list.
"On almost any other team in the division,
Jonathan Costello would be the best player and high-usage stat-stuffer," Ultiworld's editors said. "On Oklahoma Christian his fall, Costello was relegated to the Chris Bosh role in the Eagles' Big 3. However, similar to Bosh, Costello was way overqualified for that role, and it's a testament to his character and leadership that he sacrificed personal numbers for the sake of the team.
"Costello was lethal as a continuation cutter for the OC offense, and he was part of the rotation that took turns crossing over to lead defensive points. With Henke not expected to return in the spring, it will be exciting to see Costello featured in a bigger role."
Joining Costello on the All-America second-team list were Chris Cassella of Richmond, Caleb Enright of Berry (Ga.), Max Hanscomb of Middlebury, Will Brandt and Benji Keillor of St. Olaf (Minn.) and Lincoln Grench of Colorado College.
Costello's All-America selection completed a successful awards season for OC. In addition to the All-America honors for Henke and Moore, Ultiworld named Henke as its
Division III player of the year and also selected
Evan Card, a freshman from East Hartford, Conn., as its first runner-up for
Division III rookie of the year. OC coach
Garrett Taylor was named as the first runner-up for the
Division III coach of the year honor.
