Moore, Henke named to Ultiworld All-America 1st-team list

OKLAHOMA CITY (Jan. 21, 2022) – Kyle Henke and Elliott Moore, the stars on the Oklahoma Christian Ultimate team that won the USA Ultimate Division III national title, received first-team All-America recognition from the website Ultiworld.com on Friday.

OC was one of two teams that landed two players on the seven-man first-team list. Henke, a graduate student from Austin, Texas, earlier had been named as Ultiworld's Division III player of the year, while Moore, a junior from Austin, was named by the website as the first runner-up for its Division III offensive player of the year honor.

"The team and I are proud of Elliott and Kyle!" OC coach Garrett Taylor said. "It's hard to put into words what they meant to the team during the championship run, but national recognition is a good place to start in that conversation."

Henke teamed with Moore to lead what was the most productive offensive line among any of the 16 Division III teams that qualified for the national tournament last month in Norco, Calif.

During OC's three bracket-play games in the tournament – wins over sixth-seeded Whitman (Wash.), top-seeded Richmond and second-seeded Middlebury (Vt.) – Henke scored 15 goals, five more than any other player in the tournament, and he tied for third in assists with nine. Moore had three goals and a tournament-leading 17 assists.

In the title-match win over Middlebury, according to Ultiworld's statistics, Henke led the Eagles in receiving yards (263) and was second in throwing yards (396) while finishing with two goals and five assists with only one turnover on 45 touches.

"Henke looked like he was playing the game at a different speed from everyone else, effortlessly maneuvering around the field and commanding the OC offense," Ultiworld's editors wrote. "On defense, he always felt in control of his matchup, often daring opponents to throw to his person and eating up any throw that wasn't perfect. Henke isn't expected back in the spring, but his one season will go down as one of the best in the division's history."

Moore threw for 399 yards to go with six assists as the Eagles beat previously undefeated Middlebury 15-12.

"The second strike of the Eagles' 1-2 punch, Moore was clearly one of the season's most dangerous offensive weapons," according to Ultiworld. "He was just as capable of delivering the knockout blow of a blazing deep strike as he was the quick setup jabs that weakened his opponent's defense. His bold style of play made him hard to miss and one of the division's most entertaining entities and his usage will only go up in 2022."

OC won four of the five tournaments in which it played during the fall and finished second in the other one. After losing their postseason opener, the Eagles reeled off 16 straight wins to earn the program's first national title.

Joining Moore and Henke on the All-America list were Drew Otterlei of St. Olaf (Minn.), Walker Frankenberg and Leo Sovell-Fernandez of Middlebury, Hunter Lang of Richmond and Corbin Atack of Whitman (Wash.).

Two other Eagles also received postseason recognition from Ultiworld. Evan Card, a freshman from East Hartford, Conn., was named the first runner-up for the Division III rookie of the year award, while Taylor was the first runner-up for the Division III coach of the year honor.

Of Card, Ultiword said: "Knowing that opponents were going to focus on trying to stop the big names on OC's roster, Card demonstrated an excellent feel for timing and spacing throughout the season, finding openings at the right moment to punish defenses when their attention was elsewhere. This isn't to sell Card's big-play abilities short; he turned in his fair share of big grabs in Norco, coming down with many contested discs in the air. Just in his freshman season of college Ultimate, Card has loads of potential and plenty of time to realize it."

Ultiworld also praised Taylor: "Had we been tracking the steps taken by coaches in Norco, Taylor's count would have undoubtedly been towards the top of the list. Taylor's work ethic on the weekend was relentless, constantly moving up and down the sideline barking instructions to his players on the field, and he could be found on the line with a clipboard before every defensive point, outlining to his players where he wanted them in that point's particular defensive set. Taylor's also the driving force behind the recruiting for OC's scholarship program."
