NORMAN, Okla. (Jan. 22, 2022) –
Chaney Martin competed in four events – finishing third in the pole vault – and
Verrell McBride made the 60-meter final to lead Oklahoma Christian on Saturday in the J.D. Martin Invitational at Oklahoma's Mosier Indoor Facility.
Martin, a sophomore from West Plains, Mo., who's a multi-events competitor, tried his hand Saturday in the 60-meter hurdles, long jump, high jump and pole vault. In the latter, he took third among 10 competitors – beating five men from NCAA Division I programs – with a top mark of 15 feet, 1 inch (4.60 meters).
He took sixth of nine men in the 60-meter hurdles in 8.49 seconds, sixth of 15 men in the long jump at 21 feet, 2 inches (6.45 meters) and 12th of 16 men in the high jump with a career-best mark of 6 feet, ¾ inch (1.85 meters).
McBride, a junior from Norman, finished sixth among 30 runners in the preliminary round of the 60 meters with a time of 7.02 seconds. He ran a career-best time of 6.94 seconds in the final, finishing eighth. OC freshman
Isaac Koomson of Accra, Ghana, took 16th with a time of 7.15 seconds.
The only other OC runner to compete Saturday was freshman
Elijah Edwards of Mustang, who finished second in the 600 yards in 1:21.94.
Martin wasn't the only field-event competitor to try more than one event for the Eagles. Sophomore
Wyatt Thiel of Stillwater took ninth in the high jump at 6 feet, 4¾ inches (1.95 meters), tying him with teammate
Torrion Montgomery, a sophomore from Midwest City. OC sophomore
Alex Samples of Edmond was the Eagles' top performer in the high jump, finishing seventh at 6 feet, 4¾ inches due to fewer misses.
Thiel joined Martin in the long jump and placed 11th at 19 feet, 4 inches (5.89 meters). In the weight throw, freshman
Kameron Shropshire of Poteau took seventh with a throw of 39 feet, 4½ inches (12.00 meters), his season-best mark.
The Eagles will compete next Friday and Saturday in the Washburn Open in Topeka.
