TOPEKA, Kan. (Jan. 15, 2022) –
Jonathan Olsson won one throwing event and took third in another, while
Dylan Burrows won the 600-yard race to lead Oklahoma Christian on Saturday in the Washburn Rust Buster indoor track and field meet at the Washburn Indoor Athletic Facility.
Olsson, a junior from Emporia, Kan., recorded his eighth collegiate event win by taking top honors in the shot put. The mark on his second of six throws – 48 feet, 2½ inches (14.69 meters) held up for the win by 11 inches over the runner-up in the 24-man field, Tyler Chaffee of Baker (Kan.).
Olsson posted a personal-best mark of 49 feet, ¾ inch (14.95 meters) in the weight throw, moving up to third place among 21 throwers with his final effort.
Running in the 600 for the first time as a collegian, Burrows, a sophomore from Melbourne, Australia, picked up his second collegiate win (with the other coming in the 800 meters last May in the Lone Star Conference Outdoor Championships). Burrows posted a time of 1:12.53 to edge Romain Henry of Washburn (Kan.), who finished in 1:12.76. OC junior
Keiontae Williamson of Vernon, Texas, took third (among 25 runners) in 1:13.51.
Prepping for a future outing in a multi-event competition, OC sophomore
Chaney Martin of West Plains, Mo., competed in four events. He finished second in the preliminary round of the 60-meter hurdles in 8.49 seconds but didn't run in the final. His mark of 15 feet, 1 inch (4.60 meters) gave him a seventh-place finish (among 13) in the pole vault. He placed 10th in the high jump at 5 feet, 10¾ inches (1.80 meters) and 18th in the shot put at 33 feet, 2 inches (10.11 meters).
OC had a strong showing in the 3,000 meters, with three runners in the top 13 in the 59-man field.
Colten Brown, a sophomore from Boise City, Okla., took third in a career-best time of 8:32.49.
Owen Pearce, a sophomore from Kingman, Kan., was one spot back with a time of 8:33.09, while senior
Colton Meyers of Allen, Texas, also posted a career-best time while placing 13th in 8:52.30.
The Eagles had two top-10 finishers in the 29-man long jump, with
Torrion Montgomery, a sophomore from Midwest City, Okla., taking third at 22 feet, 1 inch (6.73 meters) and sophomore
Alex Samples of Edmond, Okla., seventh at 21 feet, 2¾ inches (6.47 meters).
Samples led a four-man OC contingent in the high jump. Three of them had top marks of 6 feet, 2¾ inches (1.90 meters), with Samples third, Wyatt Thiel sixth and Montgomery seventh in a 12-man field.
In a 59-man field in the mile, junior
Jelte van Atten of Leiden, Netherlands, took fifth in 4:23.90, with sophomore
Austin McNair of Denton, Texas, 12th in 4:28.90, a career-best time. Among 33 runners in the 400 meters, sophomore
Camden Miller of Sand Springs, Okla., was fifth in 50.51 seconds and freshman
Elijah Edwards of Mustang, Okla., was 14th in 52.57 seconds.
OC junior
Verrell McBride of Norman, Okla., qualified out of a 48-man field for the final in the 60 meters and finished seventh in 7.05 seconds.
The Eagles' foursome of Edwards, Williamson, McNair and van Atten took fifth of 15 teams in the 4x400-meter relay in 3:29.21.
The Eagles will compete next week in two meets – on Friday in Pittsburg State's Rumble in the Jungle Invitational at the Robert W. Plaster Center in Pittsburg, Kan., and on Saturday in the University of Oklahoma's J.D. Martin Invitational at the Mosier Indoor Facility in Norman, Okla.
